Royal Bank of Canada Debit Card Network Suffers 3-Hour Outage

Debit cards issued by Canada’s largest chartered bank, the Royal Bank of Canada, were out of service for almost three hours on Friday night due to problems with the company’s coast-to-coast transaction network.

Royal Bank spokeswoman, Beja Rodeck, said that the outage lasted from around 4 p.m. until 6:45 p.m., Eastern Standard Time. The point-of-sale debit network was completely inaccessible, but most ATM machines continued to work for Royal Bank customers.

“All I can say is that it was a technical glitch and we’re looking at the root cause,” Rodeck said in a statement, noting that the bank would investigate the outage over the weekend and explain the problem on Monday.

Canada’s other major banks, namely CIBC, Scotiabank, TD/Canada Trust, and the Bank of Montreal were apparently unaffected by the outage.
