After gaining approval from the FCC, Samsung and Cingular have formally unveiled the SGH-i607 “BlackJack,” a new HSDPA-enabled Windows-based smartphone that will compete in the U.S. wireless email market.

Weighing in at just 3.5-ounces, the BlackJack is slimmer and more compact than the 4.1-ounce Motorola Q, while its Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system is expected to serve as a competitive advantage over RIM’s forthcoming BlackBerry Pearl device.

The BlackJack also boasts an impressive battery life of 11 days in standby mode or 5.5 hours of talk time. Other features include a built-in QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth 2.0, and an integrated 1.3-megapixel digital camera.

In terms of wireless email capability, the BlackJack will come equipped with Good Technology’s Mobile Messaging software, as well as Microsoft’s direct push email technology.

Cingular Wireless is expected to make the Samsung SGH-i607 available within the next week, at a cost of $199, with a 2-year contract commitment. Although a little more pricey than the $99 Motorola Q, the BlackJack’s slim and light design, long battery life, and strong push email capability are expected to make it a strong competitor this Christmas shopping season.
