Swedish telecom equipment manufacturer, Ericsson, is expanding its cooperation with Japanese electronics giant, Sony, to cover mobile and broadband television services, an official with the company revealed this week.

Ericsson’s director of product strategy and portfolio management, Per Nordlof, said that the Sony Ericsson joint venture in the global cell phone market has worked out so well that the two companies had agreed to work together on new software to transmit mobile television services over cellular networks.

“There is a strong confidence between Ericsson and Sony after the success of the handset business and we will work to develop software that connects the gadgets in the homes with the outer world,” Nordlof commented at a recent news conference, noting that the company sees a “mass market” for wireless television within the next two years.

Nordlof also noted that “broadband TV will be an important factor (as) most telecom operators realize they will have to offer TV in order not to lose customers.”

Sony Ericsson, which was formed as a handset venture in October 2001, is currently the world’s fourth largest cell phone manufacturer, and holds a strong strategic position in the market for mobile products and services.
