Verizon Communications Inc. is hoping to take advantage of New Jersey’s new video franchising laws, by filing an application to provide fiber optic television service on a statewide basis.

If its application is approved by the state’s Board of Public Utilities, Verizon will gain access to a 2.1 million new households in 316 communities, greatly expanding the potential reach of its FiOS digital television offering.

The company says it will offer a package consisting of 200 digital cable channels, 20 HDTV channels, and 3,000 on-demand video titles, for a price of just $42.99 per month.

“We’re throwing open the door to video choice in New Jersey, and consumers will be the true winners,” said Verizon’s New Jersey president, Dennis Bone.
