America’s second largest telecom carrier, Verizon Communications, is reportedly negotiating a deal with online video portal, YouTube, which would see user-generated internet video content distributed though Verizon’s FiOS fiber optic television service.

A deal with YouTube could give Verizon a marketing edge over many of its rivals in the cable television industry, the Wall Street Journal predicts, allowing the telecom giant to expand its video and entertainment offerings more quickly. Some YouTube video content could also be made available on Verizon Wireless cell phones, according to the Journal’s report.

If the negotiations are successful, there is a good chance that the deal will be exclusive, according to one source who is familiar with the discussions. This would make Verizon the only cable or telecom carrier licensed to carry YouTube content for a set period of time.

As the leading provider of user-created online videos, YouTube has made a big name for itself on the internet over the past 20 months or so. Last month, it was acquired by search giant, Google Inc., in a deal worth $1.65 billion.
