Mobile communications carrier, Vodafone, announced late last week that it plans to launch a broadband internet service in the United Kingdom, in the first month of 2007, joining a growing group of “triple-play” telecom providers.

The wireless giant says that it will offer high-speed internet access and unlimited landline calling, at a cost of just 25 pounds for existing mobile phone subscribers. This offer will be extended to millions of British customers by the end of January 2007, and is expected to rival the bundled broadband services of BSkyB, Carphone Warehouse, and France Telecom’s Orange.

Unlike many existing ISPs, however, Vodafone says that it will rent wholesale access to BT’s network, as opposed to laying its own broadband infrastructure. Financial details of this agreement have not been disclosed.
