Comcast Corp. has just become the first U.S. cable company to begin promoting an in-house cell phone service, beginning its marketing efforts in the city of Boston, Massachusetts.

America’s largest cable provider launched the cell phone service, through a deal with Sprint Nextel, in Boston and Portland, Oregon earlier this month, after a year of trials. It is now promoting the service through a series of television commercials and direct mail advertisements in the Boston metropolitan area.

Time Warner Cable, meanwhile, which is also in on the deal with Sprint, has made its re-branded cell phone offering available in Austin, Texas and Raleigh, North Carolina, and plans to commence marketing efforts in the first quarter of 2007.

Comcast and Time Warner, along with two other leading U.S. cable companies, are making it a priority to establish their own cellular phone services, so as to promote brand loyalty and better compete with their telecom rivals, some of whom are already offering quadruple-play service bundles in select markets.
