Microsoft has moved a step closer to its goal of providing a unified enterprise communications infrastructure, in the form of a new private beta release.

The software giant has shipped Office Communications Server 2007 to about 2,500 IT professionals interested in testing the latest in communications hub technology. This marks the first Microsoft product to include VoIP telephony as an integrated enterprise communications offering on the same IP network as email, instant messaging, and video conferencing.

Office Communications Server 2007 integrates technology Nortel Networks, Avaya, Siemens Communications, and NEC Phillips, all of which have signed strategic partnerships with Microsoft.

“Customers can deploy Office Communications Server and Communicator with infrastructure they have — with IP telephony that they might have from one of those vendors — or they can deploy it in conjunction with an IP PSTN (public switched telephone network) gateway,” commented Microsoft product manager, Paul Duffy.
