Ontario-based telecom equipment maker, Nortel Networks, has signed a five-year $2 billion supply contract with Verizon Wireless, allowing it to help the carrier keep up with mobile broadband demand.

The two companies will work to expand the quality and reach of Verizon’s cellular data networks throughout the United States, and optimize them for advanced features such as mobile video, music, and games.

“Consumers expect more from their mobile devices than voice communication and text messaging,” said Nortel’s president of mobility and converged core networks, Richard Lowe. “Nortel is making it simple for Verizon Wireless to expand its network to meet this demand and to competitively drive new services to market.”
