France Telecom’s mobile phone division, Orange, has reportedly flown a number of executives to the Googleplex in Silicon Valley to discuss the possibility of launching Google-branded cell phone in the European market.

According to a recent report by the Observer, the release of a Google handset would be a big step in the search giant’s quest to conquer the mobile search industry. Pre-installed location-based search services would be an especially big draw for such a device, linking consumers with nearby businesses at any given moment in time.

“There are numerous situations in which people say ‘I wish I had Google in my hand,’ and I can imagine the younger generation of users would think that a Google phone is a cool idea,” commented Deloitte telecom consultant, Tony Cooper.

Although the Google phone plans are far from definite, and neither company has formally acknowledged that talks are even taking place, there is little doubt that a significant opportunity exists. If a deal can be reached, this could ultimately go a long way towards developing the wireless search and advertising industry.
