Recently merged telecommunications equipment giant, Alcatel-Lucent, announced yesterday that it has completed its acquisition of Nortel Networks’ UMTS wireless data business, after getting approval from the necessary regulatory authorities.

The $320 million deal, which was signed last moth, will significantly improve Alcatel-Lucent’s position in the global 3G market. The company will take over 1700 of Nortel’s employees, mostly in Canada, France, and China, and will gain a number of associated patents and contracts.

“Our aim is to achieve the optimum combination of Alcatel-Lucent and Nortel’s technologies, with minimum customer disruption. We are well positioned to capture the UMTS market growth opportunity,” commented Alcatel-Lucent’s president of wireless activities, Mary Chan, in a prepared statement.

Following this acquisition, around one in four of the world’s UMTS operators will be making use of Alcatel-Lucent’s 3G technology.
