It is now a near certainty that Apple Computer Inc. will begin producing its much-hyped iPod cell phone device over the next few months, according to Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster, who expects the device to be formally announced at the upcoming Macworld Expo in San Francisco.

Munster insists that Apple “has not missed the boat” when it comes to the music-enabled mobile phone market, and has a good chance of extending the iPod’s runaway success into the world of wireless communication.

“Apple waited several years to enter the MP3 market; we believe the company is well-positioned to enter the phone market now that early music-enabled handsets have tested the waters,” Munster wrote in a note to investors.

Munster expects that Apple’s cell phone will eventually be offered by more than one U.S. carrier, contrary to expectations that Cingular Wireless will be given exclusive rights to market the device.

“We believe Apple will target as broad an audience as possible with the iPhone. Accordingly, the company will likely sell the handset thought most or all of the top wireless service providers,” the analyst predicted, noting that “Cingular could obtain exclusive vending rights for a limited time.”
