The introduction of Apple’s iPhone product will be both a competitive challenge and a market opportunity for Samsung Electronics, according to Kim Jeong-han, a senior vice president with the Korean handset maker.

“Since it’s new it could bring both sites, positive and negative,” Kim said of the new music-enabled cell phone, which was unveiled last week by Apple CEO, Steve Jobs.

The iPhone is expected to penetrate the upper echelons of the consumer smartphone market, competing with Samsung devices like the BlackJack and Trace, “but we still have an opportunity,” Kim explained, noting that massive promotion of the Apple device “means that demand will be created.”

Analysts have also pointed out the iPhone uses a wide array of memory chips, and will create plenty of demand for NAND flash memory chips, which Apple already uses in its iPod music player devices.

The senior vice president of Samsung’s investor relations team, Chu Woo-sik, acknowledged that the iPhone could generally have a “very positive impact on the overall market and for the industry as a whole,” but refused to go into specifics about the iPhone’s component supply.
