Residents of Chicago and Washington DC will be the first to use Sprint Nextel’s forthcoming WiMAX offering, the company has announced, with initial availability of the so called “fourth-generation” wireless broadband technology expected by the end of this year.

Sprint’s WiMAX service will boast noticeably faster upload and download speeds than existing cellular broadband networks, and will be available on both mobile phones and notebook computers.

Intel, which has emerged as a leading backer of WiMAX technology has promised to design special wireless chipsets for laptop computers, while LG and Samsung are planning to develop a range of innovative new communication and entertainment devices for the WiMAX standard.
