NEC Corp. has announced the development a new software technology that will help Voice over IP users detect and block spam phone calls.

The new technology is apparently capable of detecting whether the incoming call is from a machine, by testing each caller’s ability to perform human-like conversation, blocking incoming calls that aren’t able to pass the test.

Although this sounds like it might be a little annoying for human callers, it could definitely be a good solution for high-traffic IP telephone networks that are frequently inundated with telephone spam. The product is designed work with a wide range of hardware, including SIP servers, session border controls, and home network equipment.

NEC has already successfully tested this technology against a simulated VoIP spam attack, and plans to demonstrate it publicly at the upcoming 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
