Canada’s leading wireless carrier, Rogers Wireless, says it will shut down all of its TDMA networks by the end of May, this year, forcing analog customers to upgrade or lose service.

Rogers says it will offer a free handset upgrade, allowing remaining TDMA subscribers to move onto the company’s digital GSM network.

The vast majority of Rogers customers already use GSM, but efforts are underway to inform stragglers of the upcoming change. The carrier is sending out special notifications to all customers who will be affected by the transition, warning them of the upcoming changes.

In the United States, where regulations prevent carriers from shutting of analog networks, Cingular Wireless has taken a different approach, imposing a $4.99/month surcharge on the remnants of its TDMA user base.
