U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary, Carlos M. Gutierrez, criticized the government of China last week for delaying the deployment of third-generation wireless technology in the world’s most populous country.

Gutierrez blasted China’s attempts to force its own in-house wireless standard, TD-SCDMA, onto carriers, as opposed to using a globally supported standard like W-CDMA or EV-DO.

“When a government uses its heavy hand to decide what is best for its citizens, it warps the marketplace,” the Commerce Secretary said. “We look with great concern when any country obstructs or hinders competition.”

Gutierrez assured supporters at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that the U.S. would do all it could to encourage and end to excessive technology regulation around the globe.

“On a worldwide basis, we need to allow market forces to take their course,” he explained. “We believe governments should not be allowed to decide on business models. Customers should pick winners and losers, and innovation will be the drivers of what customers use.”
