As expected, Verizon Wireless has announced the pending launch of a new television service for cell phones, making it the first major U.S. carrier to broadcast full-length TV episodes live over the airwaves.
V CAST Mobile TV will include seven distinct, ad-supported channels, offering content from the likes of CBC, NBC Universal, News Corp., and MTV Networks. A number of other content partners, including ESPN, are expected to join up in the future, to create an overall lineup of up to 20 channels.
“The service has something for everyone. It will be available on hot new handsets and is presented in a programming format that’s familiar to any TV viewer,†commented Verizon’s executive vice president and Chief Marketing Officer, John Stratton.
