Broadband telephone provider, Vonage, announced yesterday that it will soon begin marketing its own citywide wireless broadband service in select cities, using the infrastructure put in place by EarthLink.

The two companies have signed a three-year agreement allowing Vonage to buy internet access from EarthLink at a wholesale rate, then resell it in conjunction with its popular VoIP offering.

EarthLink, which has won number of mesh Wi-Fi contracts throughout the U.S., has repeatedly specified its intention to resell wholesale access to potential competitors so as to allow for fair and open competition in the markets it serves.

“As a leader in municipal Wi-Fi networks, EarthLink is committed to open access, which enables other companies to offer their unique services to their customers at consumer-friendly rates,” commented Donald Berryman, the ISP’s president of municipal networks.

Vonage Chairman, Jeffrey Citron, meanwhile, called the EarthLink deal “a perfect complement to our platform, helping us to reach a greater percentage of consumers and giving them the flexibility and mobility they want.”

No word yet on when the Vonage broadband service will be available, or how much it will cost.
