Broadcom has successfully combined 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi functionality, Bluetooth 2.0, and FM radio reception into a single 65-nanometer chip for mobile devices, the company revealed late last week.
Engineers with the firm say that their newly developed CMOS chip, known as the BCM4325, uses Broadcom’s InConcert algorithms to solve the interference problems between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, both of which operate in the 2.4-GHz frequency range.
“Until now, integrating these technologies in a single product was challenging since multiple radios in the same band can lead to self-interference,†Broadcom explained.
The chipmaker also noted that FM radio was becoming an increasingly useful feature in mobile chips, due to a rapid increase in the popularity of news and entertainment telecasts for wireless devices.
