Cox Communications became the third U.S. cable operator to begin reselling Sprint wireless services this week, launching cell phone plans in San Diego, California, and throughout the state of Arizona.

The Cox-Sprint bundle was made possible by Sprint Nextel’s ongoing agreement with a number of major U.S. cable operators. This consortium of companies is expected to extend the reach of Sprint’s cell phone services, while giving pay-TV providers like Cox and Comcast the opportunity to branch out into the quad-play market, improving their competitive stance against telecom carriers.

Cox’s wireless service will come with all the same options commonly available to Sprint subscribers, including the ability to listen to music and watch prerecorded TV content. Subscribers will also be able to check local Cox TV listings with the touch of a button.

Cox says it will introduce wireless services in several additional markets over the course of 2007, and plans to offer more enhanced integration with existing services as time goes by.
