Embarq DSL Users to Lose EarthLink Email Accounts

About 750,000 Embarq DSL customers will lose a part of their online identities this spring, as the local telephone provider ends its email contract with EarthLink.

Starting in April, Embarq customers with email addresses ending in @earthlink.net will be switched onto @embarqmail.com accounts. Messages sent to the old addresses will continue to be forwarded until October 31, at which time users will need to either subscribe to an EarthLink email plan for $3.95/month, or lose their email addresses completely.

“For most people it will be pretty painless, and it will be a significant upgrade for them,” commented Embarq spokesman, Tom Matthews, noting that the new Embarq Mail service will come with a number of convenient new features.

The company will give each customer up to eight email accounts, each with unlimited storage space, as well as a customized internet home page and 20 channels of commercial-free radio.

This will come as little solace, however, for active email users many of whom have maintained EarthLink accounts through Embarq and its predecessor, Sprint, for over a decade.

    1. Painless? Not really, notifying everyone in your address book that your email address is being changed is not painless. This is why I stick with free e-mail providers like gmail. No matter who is my internet provider, I get to keep my email.

    2. Your online publication this week ran a story initially published by the Raleigh News & Observer and distributed by the Associated Press dealing with the expiration of our contract with EarthLink and our planned migration of EMBARQ High Speed Internet customers to a new, enhanced EMBARQ-branded portal. Unfortunately, the story was incomplete, and the customer quoted did not have a clear understanding of what is being done. Customer notifications will begin soon. Please update your information if at all possible with the following:

I — and EMBARQ — would really appreciate it, WHEN the migration begins April 9, if we can help you get the correct information out. If you happen to do anything else between now and then, some truly key aspects of this will help you and your readers understand what is happening, and that this is about as simple and beneficial a transition as could be done.

First, existing Embarq High Speed Internet customers with EarthLink accounts will have until Oct. 31 to transition — a full six+ months beyond the April 9 beginning of the migration — to embarqmail.com if they want to. (New Embarq High Speed Internet customers are now getting embarqmail.com email addresses.)

Second, customers will be able to keep their username; i.e., jabberwocky@earthlink.net would be guaranteed to have jabberwocky@embarqmail.com if they wanted to retain that first part.

Third, when they do migrate, all of their EarthLink.net emails will be AUTOMATICALLY FORWARDED to their Embarqmail.com email accounts through Oct. 31.

And finally, ALL of their contacts, stored emails, mailing lists, etc., will be AUTOMATICALLY transitioned from their EarthLink account to their Embarqmail account. And, they will transition from an EarthLink account with a limited amount of storage to an embarqmail.com account with UNLIMITED storage.

There are numerous other enhancements and upgrades to this migration. Please do call or email me if you have any additional questions.

    3. Tom, thanks for that clarification. It sounds like you’re adding a lot of good new features and have taken steps to ensure that the transition is smooth.

I think it’s fair to say, however, that many customers will still be a little annoyed at losing their long-held EarthLink email addresses.

    4. Embarq promises mail will be forwarded but in truth they don’t know what happens to mail that goes to an Earthlink user’s suspect e-mail folder now based on their spamblocker settings. They claim that decision is up to Earthlink. Also, embarqmail.com already has existing users so one has to wonder how Embarq can promise that users will be allowed to keep their username when it seems highly possible that it could already be taken by someone else.

    5. I’m wondering why something shorter than “embarqmail.com” was not chosen for the new mail addresses. So often when I have to write my e-mail address, there isn’t enough room on a form, and my personal i.d. is only 6 letters. Just the name “embarq” will cause problems because most people don’t spell it correctly, so sharing my new e-mail address orally will be nearly impossible.

    6. Why can’t this be much easy to change over. I do not mind the change but I am too old to to learn new things. would someone send me how step by step how to change over to embarq e mail.

Comment by Mary Jane Tripp — March 23, 2007 #

    7. Folks, consider isolating yourself from any further email address changes. There’s two relatively easy ways to do it.

First, pick where you would like to receive your email. This can be anywhere, and you can change it at any time. For example, use BillJones123@embarqmail.com. Later, you could use a gmail or yahoo or even your work account.

      1) Register your own domain name, such as BillJones.com, then have the domain name registrar forward any email that end in @BillJones.com to the place you designate, in this case, BillJones123@embarqmail.com. This is easy and all less thank $25/year at dotster.com. Any other registrar can do similarly. You only tell people about your Bill@BillJones.com email address.

      2) Use a mail redirector. Pobox.com offers such a service. For $20/year, you can use BillJones@pobox.com as your email address. You instruct pobox.com to forward all your mail to BillJones123@embarqmail.com. You only tell people about your BillJones@pobox.com address.

Keep paying your bills, and your email address is yours forever, no matter where you actually receive your mail, and no matter what changes your ISP make under you.

    8. I changed over from Earthlink to Embarq and seem to have lost all my email. Is there not a way to have email moved over during the conversion? I wish I would have known BEFORE I changed so I could have planned differently. With the Earthlink there was what was on your desk top and what was on web mail. Can still access webmail but not what was on desk top. Lost tons of critical emails! If anyone knows of a way I can retrieve it that I am missing out on please post! Thanks!

    10. I think Embarq mail is the best thing since sliced bread. Not only do you get alot of cool features, if you have any problem at all, you get to talk with someone right here in the USA. No more trying to figure out what they are saying in India as with Earthlink. Embarq mail is an UPGRADE. After I got mine set up, all my mail just flooded in. You get to choose the features you want such as anti virus, spyware, malware, firewall, etc. With Earthlink, it was more trouble than it was worth. My main compliment is the part about American support. Way to go Embarq!

      Comment by Elaine — April 15, 2007 #

    11. Ken,
Yes, POP3 will still be available with Embarqmail. It’s so easy to set up, the tech support can talk you right through it, even the lady who said she was too old to learn new things. The only thing you need to do on your own is contact people who are NOT in your address boook and let them know of the address change.
Mary Jane, Call your tech support number and they can walk you right through the process. 1-877-646-3232 is the number.

    14. We went to work yesterday and I began to receive all kinds of messages that my earthlink account was rejecting emails. When we came home, we found that the earthlink account was deleted. NO ONE knows who - Earthlink or Embarq. We did not receive ANY notice that this was going to happen. And NO EMAIL has been forwarded to the embarq address. In fact EVERYTHING that was sent or is being sent to our earthlink address is now gone. What is upsetting is that we were not informed and we did not have an opportunity to change the email address on many secure websites. I would be flipping right now if I was in the middle of a sale on Ebay. I am still very upset over this. It was not handled well at all. The account was simply deleted.

    15. Does the new Embarq email have the spamblocker feature that Earthlink provides? I like it a lot, it works! If not, is there some way to stay with Earthlink?

      Comment by Jim — April 19, 2007 #

    16. Embarq has NOT really upgraded anything - they are charging the same price and TAKING
      AWAY!

By taking away EarthLink, they are also taking away UseNet Binary Newsgroups which Emvarq doesn’t offer - and they are taking away a well-known and respected email address and giving us an address with the word “mail” in it - how spammer-sounding! HotMAIL - gmail.com - EmbarqMAIL.com - how unprofessional sounding - sounds like one oif the spammer-approved freebie addresses!

So-and-so@embarq.com would be a well-respected address, but they could not be so kind as to allow us PAUING CUSTOMERS an embarq.com address - they had to use embarqMAIL.com! I will NEVER use an ascinine address like that as a respected email address!

I am at present looking for the quickest solution to getting out from under Embarq now because of this change. I am even looking at dropping the Embarq landline completely and going totally wireless with my cell provider, Verizon. Verizon gives email addresses that are @verizon.net not @verizonMAIL.net

I was with Earthlink and had satellite internet thru Earthlink and Hughes Network when I switched to Sprint DSL, so I have had my Earthlink addresses for many years and I am not about to lose them for the likes of some ascinine email address like embarqMAIL.com ! If they would offer me an address @embarq.com, I would probably switch with a smile and stay with Embarq, but not for an address like embarqMAIL.com

    17. I also use Earthlink to host several personal websites. Also, LOVE Trillian for managing those websites.
I haven’t heard ANYTHING about transferring these to Embarq.
Did they kinda “forget” about them ?

I agree with the majority of users that changing my email address is going to be a pain.
I have been with Earthlink through dial-up, and now DSL with Sprint(Embarq).
I DO NOT run the Total Access software, however.
I have been happy with webmail and also using Thunderbird for POP3 access.
I see no reason to change, and, if forced, will suscribe to Earthlink as just a mail provider.
(Hopefully there will be a deal to continue hosting the websites, also)

    19. I just found out about this change. It smarts of greed. Earthlink and Sprint offered and maintained a very good service with a professional email address. Now it sounds like we are part of some cheap emailing operation. I truly would like to use stronger words but will maintain my dignity, something the management people at embarq (they don’t deserve to be capitalized) failed to do. Couldn’t they have come up with something more professional. Whenever I can figure out a way to leave I will do so.
This is just short term thinking on their part. It’s time we take a stand in America and let big business know just how dumb they are.
Get your head straight embarq. It’s not too late. Make our address smart and professional. For people who have changed give them the option to stay or change again. The vast majority have yet to change.
Don’t hesitate. As Nike says - “Just Do It!”
If you don’t you will have a lot, an awful lot of unhappy clients.

    20. Please follow my advise ! Get out while you can ,Embarq will continue downhill, all they care about is money & profits.. Check out Charter or Time Warner DOUBLE THE SPEED , same money in most areas. No I don’t work for Cable. Been with earthlink 10 years. Now it’s time to go , so long Embarq take your 2 bit DSL and shove it…….

    21. I even wrote to the guy who posted here from Embarq and asked up to email him with our concerns. tom.r.matthews@embarq.com (He has a professional address - see that?) and he has NOT replied to me. Obviously our concerns are going out the window here.

Best to just GET OUT. Or we could just use the very well known addresses of @aol.com by getting ourselves some unlimited mailboxes with the FREE offering from AOL! I already got 2 - @aol.com and they are FREE and they are IMAP and Pop3 so you do not have to use the web.

I am still looking forward to getting away from Embarq altogether, though. Even disconnecting my landline with them and going totally Verizon Wireless for everything!

    22. here is a letter I sent Tom at embarq. It pretty much sums up my thoughts.
      Tom

I am not even going to write this again. I just wrote a letter explaining everything wrong with your email program and went to try and find the spell checker in the options folder only to find my entire letter was gone when I returned. I was having to look for the spell checker because I am using the lite version since the eahanced version of your program would not come up for me at this time. Yet another problem that I would not have with earthlink. Probably because my earthlink account was POP and lived on my computer instead of the web. I will give you my closing line from my lost letter, it states: If your company does not fix these problems I will have to embarq with a different high speed provider.

      Comment by Jeff Holley — April 25, 2007 #

    23. We had no clue whatsoever that our email address would have to be changed, but an Embarq rep told my son that it would have to happen. We had a problem with our Earthlink email on Monday and when my son called to try and get it fixed, this is the solution the Embarq tech gave him. “Go ahead and change your email accout now, because it is going to eventually have to happen”. I was irate when I got home. I could not believe that he was told this. He is a rising grad student and needs to receive his email as he is getting ready to leave for an internship in Teaxas. It looks like that practically everyone is NOT HAPPY with this change.

I am so disappointed that our Earthlink account has been interrupted…….we have had it for over 10 years and NEVER had the problems in those 10 years of service that we are having now! Embarq, you need to keep your customers better informed. You also need to make sure that your customer service reps and technicians are properly trained so that when someone calls to ask them about these changes, they can give them an answer instead of making you feel like you are a complete idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    25. Repeat Ken’s question: Is POP3 access still available for those who prefer keeping email on their own system? I cannot find the server info to set mine up, I should not have to call tech support for something like this. I remember my earthlink set-up was very straightforward and simple.

Loss of POP3 access is definitely NOT an upgrade, it is a real loss of functionality.

    30. grow up people. i work for embarq and i know all of the providers have there problems but trust me. earthlink sucks. we ended the contract earthlink based on the fact that the majority of you where dissatisfied with earthlink customer service. thats all we care about. some of you whiners refuse to change because your “too old” or “computer iliterate” heres some news. we will help you anyway we can. and we will do anything to ensure superior customer service. earthlink started out as a good partner. then they got greedy like aol. and started outsourceing your calls to india. that was crap. they had and inferior product and refused to upgrade the features with their total access. so we say bye bye. now we have control of our portal and our connection. while some of you have no clue about the cost we have incurred to start providing you with the service you demand, think about this. we install service for you and immediatly start losing money. we spend countless amount of man hours and phone support hours just to get you up and running. when you have a problem that warrents a tech to come to your house that just cost us 200 dollars asuming the problem was fairly easy to fix. many many many times we do not charge you for this visit even if the root cause of your trouble is YOU. why because we want you to be happy customers. ask the cable company if they give a crap. it takes about 10 seconds to cancel your acount with the cable company. but usually 2-3 days to get them to come out to fix the problem. and if you get a next day appointment its an all day appointment. i cant stress this enough people our decision to start providing our own complete suite of data services is for you complete and total ability to have your concerns addressed by one company in one country. and if we fail you… then at least you know it was US that failed you. “we will not pass the buck” again customer service thats all we care about believe it or not.

I have wasted about 10 hours of my time over this “improvement.” I wish I had never heard of Embarq. The use of the internet and e-mail was never supposed to be this hard and I have computers for over 20 years. This is totally ridiculous and the blooming idiots who did this “improvement” should be horse whipped.

    36. Please……….anything is better than Earthlink Email. No calendar, limited storage and no audio Email notification (okay can’t yet find out if Embarq has this) but I for one say good riddance to Earthlink Email which in my opinion has not kept up with the grow/ning needs and wants of it’s users.

      Comment by Len — May 12, 2007 #

    37. Finally, at long last I got my Outlook Express to work right and the telephone support was quite helpful after I finally got through. But it is a complete fiction to believe the embarq e-mail is easier and better than using outlook. It must take 10 times (maybe longer) as long to load which is completely unacceptable. I’ll never use it. So what if it has more room. I never used what I had with Earthlink. And with the advertisements and other stuff crowding up the screen, what is the advantage? I see none. And now something has messed up my Hotmail web mail account so that I have to log off and log back on although it is still quicker than using embarq e-mail. And the name embarqmail is ridiculously long. What’s with that? Who made that bone headed decision? What were they thinking? Were they thinking? This decision had to be made by a bunch of pointy headed, ivory towered individuals in a committee with no hands-on experience as actual users. And in the process I lost all my contacts and nearly 4,000 messages in Outlook. Thanks Embarq — not!!

The only saving grace is that I won’t have to speak to people in India or whereever who are totally unable to speak standard English. What a zoo? I would have happily kept Earthlink and paid the extra fee but after four or five calls and then a barely intelligible call about a “conference” call, I threw in the towel on the whole matter and just went with Embarq to be done with it. But then the Outlook wars started to get that mess straighted up. Just wasted time and lost work (thousands of hours of work down the drain.) Isn’t life great when faceless bureaucrats made decisions in a vacuum?

      Comment by richard — May 12, 2007 #

    38. What no one seems to have mentioned, which is important to me, but apparently not a major issue, is that the loss of Earthlink service also means the loss of usenet access…

So this “upgrade” means that I’m actually receiving far less service then I did before. I never used web-based e-mail and all my contact information was stored locally so I did not lose anything there, however I *did* lose usenet access (I’m an avid video arcade machine collector) and can no longer access usenet (news) groups unless I wish to use a garbage service such as googlegroups or to pay a $25 per month charge to have access to a usenet service.

So thanks embarq for your “upgrade”…

      sigh…

      Comment by Steve Muccione — May 15, 2007 #

    39. Dan - calling people whiners is no way to ingratiate yourself, or your company, to the people who pay for the lousy service being offered. First of all, why did it take my having a problem with my Earthlink account to find out about the switch? It reall doesn’t matter how “old” I am, or how “computer illiterate” I am, no information came to me or my wife from embarq. Second, don’t tell me about how Embarq is losing money providing us with service - who’s whining now? Third, regardless of how many “features” Embarq is now providing, it doesn’t make the sting feel any better about how it was all done - shabby, unprofessional - we deserve better.

To the rest of the Brave New Embarq World: does anyone have an idea to export emails from the earthlink email client without using the weak export option provided with the app?

Any suggestions as to how to get to my email without the internet shutting down?

    45. Charlotte - my wife is setting up an email account at yahoo.com. There are a number of places to get free email accounts - yahoo, iwon (I don’t recommend iwon because of the advertising… but you may not be able to escape that anyway), hotmail (microsoft), etc. If you want to keep embarq, but not have to log in to email through their site, download an email applicaiton called Mozilla Thunderbird at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/. If you are not used to setting up such products, you will need the following: pop server (inbound mail) pop.embarqmail.com and your user name is your email address; smtp server (outbound mail) smtp.embarqmail.com and your user name is your email address. Good luck… mike.benoit@oracle.com

    46. Ever since we had internet in 1998 we have had nothing but impeccable service from our local phone company and Earthlink whether first dial-up or later DSL. Our contacts run into the hundreds and involve websites listing our email address as well. We received the official “change to Embarqmail” announcement this morning although I had heard about it before. If there is a problem between the phone company and earthlink it should not be settled at my expense which will be $3.95 per month if I keep our Earthlink email account.

I am not opposed to change or big business but this change is obviously not for my benefit but for the benefit of someone else at my expense.
I simply want to voice my opposition although there is little I can do about it.

      Comment by Les — May 19, 2007 #

    47. I guess I’m another victim of this so called upgrade. Tried to do it yesterday but can’t even set up my mail because when I follow the prompts I get a message from Firefox that the address cannot be attained. Embarq’s live chat confirmed there is a problem and it should be resolved within 48 BUSINESS hours, so who knows when. Meanwhile anyone e-mailing me is getting it back as “undeliverable.”

So I’m using Yahoo and wonder if anyone knows if I can use Outlook Express to get it to my desktop since I can’t access my Embarq account yet? I admit, I’m pretty naive about all this.

I do know you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that Embarq put the cart before the horse. They sure didn’t waste any time disabling my Earthlink account.

    48. Gawd… someone help. Only 1 out of 5 of my Earthlink emails are showing up at Embarq, and I can’t get Outlook to look and find ANY of my email at all. All I get is error messages. Don’t they just use POP3.embarqmail.com and smtp.embarqmail.com like normal people? I hate this. I’m losing my personal webspace too from Earthlink, and as Embarq first told me on the phone, “I’m sorry, we don’t offer that.” This whole thing is a joke.

    50. Dan, you are a really POOR employee of Embarq by posting what you did - you can’t even distinguish between the proper use you YOUR and YOU’RE. You need to be FIRED.

To Steve Muccione: Not only do we lose access to Usenet newsgroups by switching to Embarqmail but we also lose the webspace Embarq said we would have that Earthlink gave us - Embarq does not offer that so I was told just now on Embarq Tech chat. I switched just to be rid of the hassles, but I will not use them except like here to post on the web… I have free IMAP addresses with AOL now for other things.

    51. This has been a disaster! I signed up for DSL with Embarq and Earthlink email, and now Embarq has decided to not honor that arrangement by substituting their email for Earthlink. Not only is the Embarq email crummy (loaded with ads, e.g.) but they have the unmitigated gall to now CHARGE me for Earthlink mail!! And the $3.95 fee program does not have the features of what I had been paying for when it was part of Sprint/Embarq. I still find it difficult to believe Embarq can get away with this. An added minus includes losing over two hundred stored emails that disappeared during the transition. I have been with Earthlink for several years, from dial-up to DSL, and am extremely annoyed at what Embarq has done.

      Comment by Steve — May 21, 2007 #

    52. The conversion to Embarq mail was the worst mistake. None of my Earthlink e-mail is being forwarded. It bounces back to the sender as “user not found.” Like other users, I also had problems with ’sending and receiving’ in Outlook. Worked fine when I tested the settings, but would come up with “server not found” after that. And beware…if you have your own anti-virus software, Embarq will totally delete it when it downloads it’s own version. I did not even live with Embarq mail for 24 hours before scrapping it! What a nightmare!

Does anyone know how to delete an e-mail account with Embarq?

My issue is I thought everything from Earthlink would transfer and I also wen to the trouble of changing my email address at all of my important sites for bills etc. well they all keep telling me I need to reply to the confirmation email that was sent to EARTHLINK well NOW I CANNOT get into Earthlink!!! I am so mad I can’t see straight and if anyone has any idea of what to do or who to call PLEASE let me know and Thank you in advance.

    58. i work for embarq dsl tech support and i feel the need to clarify all the misconceptions regarding our service. first when you get dsl high speed internet you are paying for! and please understand this, “INTERNET ACCESS”. YOU ARE NOT PAYING FOR AN EMAIL ACCT OR A WEB PAGE, THAT IS ONLY AN ADDED BENEFIT, as i read all this comments i can only think that people will just grab onto something just to justify their decisions, the decision to switch from earthlink to embarq was a business decision.

second. nothing in life is perfect, if you are a homemaker or a business person, common sense dictates that nothing in this world is perfect. having said that perhaps next time some of you will have backup plans, such as saving all your emails outlook (not outlook express) puts all of its data into ‘pst’ files. this
includes the task list, contacts (address book), calendar, and all the mail
in all the mail folders (unlike outlook express that stores each folder in
separate files). always keeping alternate emails where you can send or cc your emails………i do not believe anyone is to old or to dumb to use common sense and all the information that you need is all at your disposal on the internet. which is the service that you are paying for in the first place……………………….mike

      Comment by mike — May 24, 2007 #

    59. I’d like to take the opportunity to clarify a few things here and to post some responses to some questions here. Oh and before anyone says anything…. I’m not an employee of Embarq.

What features were implemented? The features that were implemented first were the ones used by the majority of our customer base. Usenet and webspace were not immediately implemented but may be in the future.

Why wasn’t I contacted about the switch? Actually a mass email was sent out. Also a notice was supposed to of been inserted into your billing statement in the mail or so I’ve been told. It may of been though that your email account was disabled that you did not get the notice about the switch and did not find out until you called in.

Why isn’t my email forwarding? If it is not forwarding then you should contact Embarq Technical Support and let them know about it. They will verify the issue and resolve it. They still have access to Earthlink until the end of Oct 2007.

How do I export Earthlink Mailbox emails using a tool other than what is provided in the app? Earthlink Mailbox allows you to either export into a propriatary format or into csv (Comma Seperated Values) which can be imported into some email applications. One such application is Microsoft Outlook (not the express version). An alternate option is ABC Amber Earthlink Converter. It is not free but I remember trying to hunt down something to do what I wanted. It is available here. It costs $20 for a single-user license.

Issues with setting up your email address…

Some of you have cited issues with setting up your email account in email applications. If you have double and triple checked your settings and they look good but you are getting messages like “server not found” or “invalid username and/or password” then try starting over. I have always found that simply removing the old profile and starting over has done the trick. Those profiles get corrupted from time to time and change lots of settings only makes it more likely.

I would also like to resolve a couple of issues for a couple of posts here.

@Roger: Please ensure that Mac Outlook Express is setup to authenticate with the outgoing server. If you are not authenticating it will still allow to send email but you will get what you describe. Can only send to other Embarq customers.

@Steve: Embarq has always reserved the right to change the features provided with the service. Check the EULA (End User License Agreement) when you get a chance. It mentions it fairly clearly in there. This is also fairly standard in most of them and you always get the opportunity to view it. Few act on the change of features bit though.

On that note I would like to finish up and state that Embarq is going through a transitioning phase. They are finally taking responsibility for the services that were provided and diving into a new area of what it means to be an ISP. This is going to be a bumpy road not just for the wonderful techs at Embarq but also for the customers that are coming along for the ride. Please work with them as they make their best attempt to smooth out the ride for the customers.

    61. The claim that you can transfer your old emails to the new account is misleading. I did what was instructed to transfer them, but when I found the email with an attachment with my old emails, each one was gibberish. I called customer service at Embarq, and was told that they were lost forever after I closed my Earthlink account, and there was nothing anyone could do. They were polite, but they simply told me there was absolutely no solution.
The claim that you can transport your Earthlink email was just false.

No answer to the question regarding SpamBlocker, I certainly don’t want all that JUNK mail coming into my mailbox! I also use webmail alot while traveling…don’t know if that is available. Does anyone know about these. Also, I use Incredimail and don’t know how that will work.

      Comment by Judy — May 30, 2007 #

    66. There is one more problem with Embarq email and internet access that has not been mentioned in these posts. While traveling, one could always find a local access number anywhere in the country using Earthlink dial-up numbers and the Earthlink ISP. I’m told there is no such dial-up availability once you change over to Embarq.com exclusively. Yes, you can access your email only as long as there is an existing internet connection available where ever you are located. If you are in a location where there is no existing access to the net, you are out of luck.

    72. All I see on the web when I look for issues with this forced changeover is smak like “we are providing them with upgrades for the same price.” Well- it is definitely not true. I use my 8 earthlink accounts for webspace and image hosting. I could care less about webmail- I have used OUtlook for ten years. Unlimited storage for email does nothing for me. Why not unlimited storage for my files? This is what i really need. Why waste the space on emails? I also was able to sign into my earthlink account and use dial up when I went on vacation because there was always a local access number. NOW I will not be able to do this because Embarq is not a national company. This is a DOWNGRADE.

My mom and my grandparents have enough trouble with this stuff and NOW they both will have to waste their time trying to figure something new and more confusing to them then ever! I am very diappointed in embarq right now. Well, I better quit talking about it and go waste my weekend setting this stupid thing up. I have never liked Sprint and now like them even less, but for now I have them. If you really hate them that bad you can always try a CLEC company in your area.

Now as for the help to this problem and using MS OUTLOOK:

      1. OPEN OUTLOOK
      2. GOTO TOOLS
      3. GOTO E-MAIL ACCOUNTS
      4. IF YOU HAVE ANY EXISTING ACCOUNTS FROM EARTHLINK, DELETE THEM. (To delete: Tools, E-Mail accounts, View or change E-Mail accounts, Highlight all accounts and click delete.)
      5. ADD A NEW E-MAIL ACCOUNT
      6. SERVER TYPE: POP3-CLICK NEXT
      7. INTERNET E-MAIL SETTINGS: YOUR NAME: Whatever you want
      8. E-MAIL ADDRESS: Whatever your E-Mail address is.
      9. INCOMING MAIL SERVER: pop.embarqmail.com
      10. OUTGOING MAIL SERVER: smtp.embarqmail.com
      11. USER NAME: Whatever your E-Mail address is (including @embarqmail.com)
      12. PASSWORD: WELL YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT!
      13. TEST ACCOUNT SETTINGS
      14. NEXT
      15. IN MAIN EMAIL PROGRAM CLICK SEND/RECEIVE
      16. PRETTY MUCH DONE

This should get you by until you find something new these setting will work in any
E-Mail program you are using or want to use. I hope this helps somebody.

    80. I have had that error message “‘554 : Relay access denied’” For me it was caused because I did not put my whole email addres in, (in the smtp set up)I left out the @embarqmail.com part of my email address. I did not put up with the loss of my web page or use- net news server, so I signed up with Earthlink.net. It was hard to get embarq to admit that it can be done. ($3.95) You have to get to emarq high speed data on the phone and get them to 3 way you to Earthlink (Conference call). It took me about 5 hours to get the thing figured out and done. Embarq said something about a refund check, but I will beleive it when I see it. You only get two email accounts and it takes about 15 min to switch over, so you had better save your other email accounts localy if you want the email in them (I think you can buy more email accounts). Two email accounts are ok for me. Now I don’t have to spend hours changing all me business accounts that have my email. Ebay, Amazon, PayPal, banks, Bill Pay, ect.

    81. I got ready for the transfer yesterday, exporting my ‘favorites’ first, and gathering up my email addresses to notify everyone (myself - I don’t want too much automation). I don’t keep an open addressbook either. I had to clear out my earthlink Web Page. Then I started changing things this afternoon. Logged in OK, but I had to import my ‘favorites’, since IE7 latched onto some old version somewhere. Old earthlink email is gone, and I removed the software (and rebooted), although I still see the ‘Blockers’ in IE. Not sure if they are supposed to be still there. Sent out email to people about the change. Got a re-directed email from my earthlink address, so that seems ok. Still have to notify a lot of places. Not using the features such as the firewall, since I already have ‘Trend’ working for a while. The ‘Total Access’ was useful to log in, but I’m getting used to the new ways of doing things. Maybe it’s not so bad after all. Suggest embarq think about adding some web page storage, and some limited dial-up access when away from home… I’m sure things might go wrong sometime, but so far, so good….

Also, from reading the above posts. Embarq employees are given the domains xxxx@embarq.com. The users however have to put up with xxxx@embarqmail.com. 87. Misery loves company. I actually enjoyed reading everyone’s complaints because I’ve had my feathers ruffled all the same and … been complaining to my embarq employee husband right and left about this switch to embarq. He purses his lips and tries to placate me. I think my biggest complaints are that 1. I don’t have the suspect email folder filter I enjoyed using at earthlink 2. I cannot shut off the suspect thing at earthlink now that my account is closed for access at earthlink - so what emails am I NOT receiving that are sitting in a suspect folder??? 3. no spell checker 4. they (earthlink ? embarq ?) sent out auto notifications to everyone in my address book and that caused me a LOT of email and grief. Half the addresses in my box I would NOT have notified of an email change - for example, I may have had to provide my addy to receive a receipt for a purchase somewhere so I added them to my address book at earthlink. So I ended up with hundreds of emails from such places saying “what is your account with us..” I came home from vacation to these problems and was not a happy camper.
I haven’t had as many problems and complaints as some of you but I do feel for you. My current problem is that for some reason embarq email is being delayed when sent to AOL users. I’m getting emails from my sister and a friend with AOL asking why my emails from several DAYS ago are just now getting to them. It’s extremely frustrating and I was ready to blame embarq but I only just today realized, AOL must be having a problem accepting the emails ‘from’ embarq. Everyone else without aol can receive my emails fine. sigh. I guess I have to complain to aol now.

    88. Before switching from earthlink total access to embarqmail, I opened a tech chat with both companies. Thought I had it knocked, but after making the switch and hours of fiddling around, I have not found a good solution. If you were an earthlink total access user, your contacts reside on your PC, in your email client program, not online with earthlink. The migration wipes out earthlink’s total access email client, and earthlink’s protection center and substitutes Embarq’s. If you did not maintain your contacts online with earthlink, your contacts will get wiped out in the migration unless you export them to a saved file (use several differnt csv formats when you do this). You can also export your saved email folders but you will have to read them forevermore in csv format, I could not import them to my newly downloaded email client. I downloaded Mozilla and it was able to import my contacts from the saved csv file, and it works well, but it is still not stable. Might be a conflict with Embarq’s firewall, still fiddling with it. Mozilla or any other email client will allow you to avoid using Embarq’s webmail which is slow, less than full featured and the interface is poor, I can’t read the headers due to color scheme making them illegible, I won’t use it, so I am trying to get Mozilla stabilized. Geez what a pain in the neck.

    89. This is in response to Laura - We all have access to our EarthLink accts. until October 31st. Juts log into the webmail part of EarthLink and enter your ELNK email addy and the password for it - Log in here:

      https://webmail.earthlink.net/wam/login.jsp?redirect=%2Fwam%2Findex.jsp&x=1670789948

I have shut off all spamblocking this way so nothing will be caught up that I cannot get to and I have deleted ALL address books from those ELNK accts and I have redone all forwarding so that it goes to a free AOL address rather than any Embarqmail address. Embarq cannot MAKE me have my ELNK mail forwarded to their slower than molasses in January mail servers!

      Comment by Laynie — June 18, 2007 #

    90. Yes, if you used earthlink’s total access I can see how switching to Embarq’s version of that program would be painless. What percentage are we talking here though?

How about the rest of us? I use earthlink to host my eBay seller pictures, I have had my earthlink email since dialup - I use one of my earthlink addresses for just about every site I’ve ever signed into. Some as long as 7 or 8 years ago. I will still need to use that for various sites.

How about users like myself who get email from more than one computer? I have never liked the earthlink portal. I choose to either log into the earthlink webmail or get it through outlook, macmail or on my blackberry. I need to manually configure my earthlink email settings from time to time - I can imagine this being a nightmare with embarqmail.

“I called earthlink and kept my account. Then I called Embarq and reduced my DSL from 5 mbs to 3 mbs, saving the cost of the earthlink account” - thanks for this tip I’ll either do the same or maybe its time to rethink DSL.

Everyone in your contact list that was in your earthlink address book comes up in alpha order and if your list is as long as mine is, you just have to click on the name bar at the top to continue the alphabet. I found this by myself even after emailing Tom Matthews with my problem who wrote back saying he would have Embarq look at it and never did.

    92. Embarq really took a step backward on this venture. The embarqmail.com name is so yesterday, especially when they keep embarq.com for employees. Why not add embarqmail.net also? Too much confusion here!

The cute way of getting people to change is by using games and prizes. I can assure you that most people still don’t have a clue about what is happening. The TV ads are cute however; they are good at marketing.

The offer of unlimited space and free email accounts is disingenuous. Confusion and inconvenience are the benchmarks used here.

I know that the bottom line is $$$$$ but what were they thinking.

I’m starting to miss AOL.com and may have to return…

    93. After reading many comments on email messages lost from TotalAccess archive folders, decided to use the export feature as backup before upgrading…

Using the TotalAccess function to export messages to .csv is simple and SEEMS to work fine. It saves to a file that you can import to Outlook, MS Access db or just leave in csv file to view in Excel. The flaw with this concept is that the TotalAccess export tool does not let you pick which fields to export for messages (it does with address book records). So the csv file created includes subject, body, and addresses but no message dates. Does anyone have tips to get dates included with the messages?

Also tried linking from MS Access into the elnkMail.mdb archives on my PC, but found the RFCHeader and RFCMessage fields of the Messages table are in a binary data type that Access does not handle, assume it’s proprietary to the TotalAccess software. Any hints on converters?

I did find that TotalAccess export to .dat file and then import to another TotalAccess account works great and gives all the key fields… but no real value except to test the feature if TotalAccess will go away during conversion. Has anyone tried to reinstall TotalAccess application after converting to embarqmail to use it to read message archives?

I’m sure Dan doesn’t work for Embarq, he probably works for Earthlink. Either way he’s an idiot.

Thank you to all others for the help with the email which is why I read the comments.

    95. Well now, it appears that “Skippy” the bright, young, newly minted MBA has sold his “new” idea (for EMBARQ to take over email) to EMBARQ, a company that struggles to maintain adequate telephone service. This changeover will be an interesting train wreck to watch — actually it already is. It is also interesting to note there is no “check here” box to keep your Earthlink email service. Calls and online chats to Customer Service reps at BOTH companies each say to contact the other with regard to keeping Earthlink and how to get billed for doing so. In addition, EMBARQ reps are completely clueless as to how to arrange the hosting of domain names. It is like pulling teeth to get any useful information from either company — forums such as these are apparently the only source. Increased pressure and push-back from customers will be the only things that will escalate the problems to a level where they can be resolved.

    97. Regarding the potential loss of Earthlink Email accounts by Embarq DSL subscribers……..

Does anyone know for CERTAIN what will happen and when it will happen, if Earthlink Email subscribers simply do nothing?…….

I have not received any information from either company. The junksnailmail from Embarq seems intended to persuade current Earthlink Email subscribers into ‘upgrading” to Embarq. Nothing is mentioned about the loss of web space or other lost features.

      Comment by Arleigh — June 24, 2007 #

    98. Good question posed by Arleigh. Perhaps it is time that Earthlink contacts their EMBARQ-related subscribers and provides information as to how we might keep our Earthlink accounts using an on-line procedure rather than having to do it manually via voice-through-India.

    99. I have had nothing but problems since I switched over to Embarqmail. I spent almost 2 hrs on phone w/tech guy who had to get Earthlink in on the problem. The people @ Earthlink finally helped me get it straightened out. I’ve had nothing but problems w/receiving and sending emails since switching to Embarq. I finally gave up and got a GMail account. No trouble using it although I’m not crazy about web based email programs.

Looked into switching to cable internet but I’m in one of those package deals w/Embarq and if I pull out of email than everything else goes up in price. Somedays you just can’t win.

    100. Earthlink accounts will be discontinued October 31 according to Embarq support I talked to.

I found, though, that I can cancel Embarq and sign on as a new Earthlink DSL customer. They tell me that they cannot give me service so long as I am an Embarq customer, but if I cancel, they can take me on as a new customer. They told me that I could keep my old addresses.

Offers on Earthlink’s website apply. I have not tried to do it yet.

Will I continue to receive 20 hours of dial-up service with my EMBARQ™ High-Speed Internet?
No. EMBARQ™ will no longer offer 20 hours of dial-up service with EMBARQ™ High-Speed Internet.

Will I continue to receive 10 MB of personal web space with my EMBARQ™ High-Speed Internet?

Till then, I’m using gmail; really user friendly.

But: how do I send my Embarq address mail names/email addresses to gmail? Embarq doesn’t even allow the cut/paste option, at least to me!

    104. Here is what worked for me. From earthlink’s total access, “export” all your email contacts to a csv file and save it on desktop. Open and view the csv to verify it and make a backup copy too. Make the switch (migrate) to Embarqmail.com. That installs F-secure’s securityware and wipes out earthlink’s total access email. Uninstall embarq’s F-secure and download free antivirus, antispyware (I chose AVG). Download a free email client (I chose Mozilla Thuderbird). “Import” your email contacts from the csv file into Thunderbird (this may require editing the csv file first to remove unnecessary columns that cause interference during import). Set up Thunderbird to recognize Junk mail. Turns out the free software is great. The result is as good as if not better than the earthlink total access setup that we had before.

Should I rerun the procedure for switch over again?

    107. Embarq is making a huge business mistake by not realizing the pain they are causing their subscribers. Just realize how many accounts you have with your email address. You will have to make a number of phone calls to get accounts straight again.

My recommendation is to acquire an email address that won’t likely go away (e.g. yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc.)

I haven’t been too happy with embarq these days anyway and am considering dropping them altogether.

    109. Referring to the above message — I thought I HAD an email address that wouldn’t go away, i.e. Earthlink. Beginning in the early 1990’s, I had a succession of ISPs that were bought-out, merged, acquired, etc., and then, finally, came Earthlink. In the early days, ISPs were small-time, primitive businesses operated out of home offices and garages — I was happy to see those days end. And now, Embarq is trying to drag us back into the garage with a 3rd-rate email system.

One of the above contributors said he was able to keep his Earthlink account by engaging in a 3-way conference call with both Embarq and Earthlink. I am glad he was successful, but the likihood of the rest of us getting both entities on the line at the same time and working through the matter is next to zero.

Hey, Embarq, how about an easy-to-find “Check Here” box to offer us a simple way to keep our Earthlink accounts? Yeah, right.

I also checked “Use same settings as my incoming mail server”

This is poor and unprofessional for Embarq to not read their own Privicey Policy. Selling Out to any sites without the owner’s consent is wrong. EMBARQ is on the boarder line of promoting sex with our children. STOP!!! Now before something bad happens

I also don’t know how to tell the difference between ‘normal’ earthlink mail and webmail and here is the problem. Much of my email and folders saved are from and about my son, who is now deceased. If as many of you say, this is lost in a transfer, I can’t imagine another heartbreak from such a loss. i have no confidence in embarq after reading all these posts, no confidence in my ability to change over and retain all my memories and mail and don’t really understand what my options are. also, i like many others travel and resent that i wouldn’t be allowed to use a national service, like earthlink.

    115. I think Embarq should have given customers a choice for free embarq or keep earthlink for a fee. What’s wrong with that?
Don’t change to embarq, though. I took the plunge and it has been a real pain in the A__! I get more windows asking for my address and password and it keeps coming back and you don’t get your email.
I have been working all day trying to get my earthlink account reactivated. Both embarq and earthlink say I have to talk to the other party for this to happen and in the case of embarq, after thirty minutes of holding for the next customer (no)service representative.
I finally got a CSR that has been working hard to help, finally.
However, by the time this is over I may tell embarq and earthlink to screw it, I’ll go somewhere else.

      Download Thunderbird. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/
Turn off your virus software. Then install Thunderbird. Follow these directions to set up your earthlink account. http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=127339
Before you Get your email #17 in directions, go to Options under Tools. Go to server settings. Check mark leave mail on server. That way you will have your son’s emails in 2 places. Now get mail.
After you set up embarqmail, I would continue to use Thunderbird. But you will have to change all those settings you just made for earthlink.
      Change to: pop.embarqmail.com
      smtp.embarqmail.com
make sure your entire email address is in the user name box.

    117. It seems as if Embarq (unwieldy, clumsy name choice to begin with, how much did they pay some PR firm to come up with this?) is risking its former Sprint customer base. I am happy with Earthlink and do not want the idiotic “embarqmail.com” designation. I am considering dumping my home long distance and going with another company. I am also willing to pay the $29 a year to keep the Earthlink address. Changing is a royal pain, and the horror stories I read here are a warning sign to everyone. I have a Ph.D. in the field of communication, and I can tell you that Embarq does not communicate well at all.

    120. This just in — In yesterday’s mail (7-28-07) I received a letter from Embarq requesting (again)my “immediate action” in “upgrading” to their e-mail system. And so on, and so on, but in the final paragraph I am instructed to “contact Earthlink to maintain your existing e-mail for a monthly charge.” Considering the hassles experienced by people KNOWN TO ME, I ‘ll keep Earthlink. Now, all I have to do is find someone at Earthlink that can make sure my current e-mail account is carried over past Embarq’s drop-dead date of 10-31-07. This will NOT be as easy as it sounds. This will be a case of the right hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, much less the left hand. As 10/31 approaches, things will become clearer — even to Earthlink.

I have stopped Earthlink, mostly because I am cheap, and could not justify the extra expense, low though it is. Since I changed, things have been fairly “normal”, although the mail start-up is definitely slow. I just installed the FREE Embarq Online Security, because my Trend Micro subscription expired - and it is working just about the same (”F-secure” - derived?). I also have a separate web-based e-mail for non-family people, and for family in case the embarqmail does not work. So far, it seems to be working. Can it be better? Of course. Let’s see if they can improve it. Er.. how about a reduced monthly charge, never mind keeping it the same until 2525!

    133. I’m still battling with the email change I just did. I agree that they should have left off the “mail” part of “mbarqmail”. What’s the point?

I’m trying now to locate a free email pop service so I can get my mail on my desktop the way it was with Total Access. I have Outlook Express set up for Gmail. The online Embarq email is terrible. I could get used to the new format in time, but it is so SLOW. It takes forever to “build” the email program. It’s like having 56K again.

And I haven’t gotten brave enough to install the Embarq security download. I have no idea of what it will do. Right now it says I’m logged in thru ____@earthlink.net but of course that address doesn’t exist anymore. I’m not sure if I log out that I can get back online with the new embarqmail address.

This was all really poorly done.

      Comment by Snicki — August 10, 2007 #

    134. Snicki, embarqmail supports POP, so you don’t need to use gmail if you don’t want to, but it’s a thought, since we don’t know how long the name embarqmail will last. See my post from July 1 above, and settings you will need for your Outlook Express in June 5 post above so you can avoid using embarq’s webmail. You can also sign up for free earthlink email, but it won’t allow you to use your former name, since it is still active.

So…I called Earthlink, and arranged to pay the $3.95/month to keep 2 email addresses. Then, I called Embarq to make sure they wouldn’t cut it off on their end somehow (I admit, I don’t really know how any of this works) and not only did they assure me that I won’t lose my earthlink account as of 10/31, BUT, they are going to issue me a credit to cover my first year of charges from Earthlink! WOW! I was surprised, but a big thank you to Embarq for handling this so nicely. I have my email, and it’s free! Call them…before you switch. See what they will do for you.

Don’t even care that their mail system is the most user unfriendly e-mail system I have used since the invention of the internet, and yes…I was there at the beginning. In fact Tim Berners Lee was one of my customers and taught me how to use the thing. But, since I was required to leave Earthlink my computer was running like a Rolls Royce and now is running like jogging shoes…. I would like to have my computer back. I am not a nerd….what do they think…we all are? There is so much crap on their page that it takes forever for my system to run it. It didn’t before so we can assume that all their stuff uses up a chunk of memory. It takes absolutely forever to run now.
It runs like dial up. what’s the use of dsl anyway? If it runs like dial up. I am so sick to death of the thing…it’s really frustrating. but, I purchased a package deal and I am stuck for some months….what a hassle….
what were they thinking….oh yes, i remember….they are trying to please everyone.
I don’t think there control group in their feasibility study was very good… or probably a group of nerds. or who knows….in any event…it sucks….sucks….sucks…. that is all I can say. the mail sucks the everything sucks… guess what….want FAQ’s….I mean real FAQ’s…not going to happen. I guess that makes sense. Who wants everyone to know that someone up their makes sucky decisions. Until it affects their bottom line it won’t change….well guess what…my contract will be up some day. they aren’t the only starfish in the sea.

    146. I had some difficulties with the email when switching over. Thru trial and error and lots of invested time, I finally figured out some workarounds to get it working better for me. Note: my workaround requires you to use EarthLink MailBox (it’s free!), but I was used to it anyway so no big deal.

I actually created a Blog for the switchover and my detailed steps. So if you are interested in the steps I took you can visit the blog (http://elnk2embarq.blogspot.com). The steps are too many to post here. Unfortunately, I haven’t figured out solutions/workarounds to the other problems that plague EMBARQ but when/if I do I will certainly post them on this blog!

It was very frustrating and I thought it might be helpful for anyone else about to or having gone through this to maybe be able to get it to work or avoid these email issues.

      Good Luck!

    147. I am so fighting mad about this, but who cares, Certainly not Embarq. As usual we are at the mercy of yet another utility company that can do whatever they want and we have to suffer for their actions. I do not recall receiving a poll on what we, as the consumers, felt about this. I hope the suits involved in this are happy…. I am not.

    148. Like most people, I don’t like change. I switched to Embarq Email last night, and right off, I hated it! The screen was split between Embarq’s page and my Google page, and I couldn’t figure out how to maximize either. Tonight, I straightened things out. This forum was awfully helpful - especially CC Gordon’s post from 4/27. I needed to know how to set up my POP, and yes, it’s about impossible to find using Embarq’s site. I’m glad I didn’t have to call support. I don’t need (or like) all the bells and whistles. Every time somebody says it’s “improved” it seems it’s only more complicated. Here’s what worked for me:

After screwing around for a while with the Embarq site for email, I found the exact page that I wanted and bookmarked it.

I chose the “Lite” because I believe in keeping it simple.

I changed my settings according to what CC gordon said - messed around with the password stuff (checked, unchecked, etc.) - I use Thunderbird.

Bottom line - For what I need, this works.

Lastly, I found it amusing all the people raising Hell about this and Embarq’s “employees” adding their bits. The POP settings were really helpful. I’m grateful to CC Gordon because that’s what I needed to know most. I can adjust to the rest, and if I couldn’t, I’d just change providers rather than bitch & moan.

    151. Here’s some help for embarqmail user’s that want to use another client like outlook express or windows mail. Go to Embarq.com/support/residential/userguides and they have instructions for setting up these clients.
However, they do not tell you that you must check “my server requires out going authentication” under tools/mail account/properties/servers/outgoing servers. Failure to check this box will prevent outgoing mail and produces a 554 error code. So, set up your account and then check properties to fix this and you should be in business.

It does have the “my server requires out going authentication” If you want to avoid errors this statement box must be checked.

      Comment by Earl — September 4, 2007 #

    156. Rick, In outlook express select tools.
then accounts, then mail, then the name of the embarq account you’ve set up (or any mail account if you just want to see it) and select properties.

Then from the dialog box select servers and you’ll see the setting at the bottom.

Second question, I have something like 1400 contacts. Is there a way to transfer that to webmail so that I can have a “backup” in the future & also so that embarq can notify all the addresses that my address has changed without me having to do that?!

      Thanks!

Finally found chat support and got the server info, POP3 access does work but it seems odd that it was hard to find. Here it is if anyone else is looking for it. 159. I have the earthlink dial up through Embarq. I don’t know what this means for me. I don’t want to loose my e-mail or my enternet service provider. The high speed internet is not available where I live. So what does Emabrq plan to do for me and other customers like myself? I wasn’t even aware of the split between the companies until today 9-8-07. So I am very confused about what I am supposed to do..

      Comment by Kimberly — September 8, 2007 #

    160. Kimberly You will loose pretty much everything. If you switch over to Embarq you will loose your dial-up access. This new “upgrade” includes taking away our dial-up access, Usenet, 10 MB Web space and your Earthlink email address.

This was taken from the Embarq FAQ.

No. EMBARQ™ will no longer offer 10 MB of personal web space with EMBARQ™ High-Speed Internet.

BTW once you switch you can no longer get into your Earthlink account to access you email anymore.

    161. Late last week, I received, in the mail, a letter from Embarq urging me to “make the switch.” I have received these before but, in this letter, Embarq included a paragraph giving me a phone number ( 866-228-1558 )to call if I wanted to keep my Earthlink email address(es). I did, so I called this morning. Embarq answered but readily connected me to an Earthlink agent that made the arrangements/changes to let me keep all 5 of my Earthlink email addresses (family, you see), each with 100MB mailbox capacity. The additional cost was $5.00 per month. The agent also arranged for the billing to be separate and apart from Embarq’s. He gave me a confirmation number and a direct phone number ( 888-327-8454 ) in case I had any further questions. All-in-all, it was very quick and painless — except for the extra charges, of course, but I believe it is money well-spent. I was prepared for a hassle and interminable waits on hold but it didn’t happen. Earthlink and Embarq have apparently escalated their procedures. I don’t know if this will help any of you that have already made the switch but perhaps it will help others who have not. Nope, I’m not a not a shill for either company — it just worked out for me.

If you don’t have Embarq DSL, you will not be affected. The “Upgrade” affects only Embarq DSL clients who have Earthlink web mail service. Therefore, your Earthlink dial up service will not change. You are already paying for that separately from Embarq, right?
      >

In fact, Embarq DSL users can separately purchase Earthlink DIAL UP service thus keeping their addresses, web space and all other Earthlink features. The cost may be an issue, however.

The very next day I could not reply or send on ether of the other e-mails and get the 550 error… I am seeing flames if you know what I mean.

      Comment by Ziggi — September 18, 2007 #

    166. This change is not cool. When will ISPs realize that an e-mail address is similar to a phone number. Could you imagine the reaction if they told everyone they were randomly changing your phone number?

I will be changing providers since I have to change my e-mail address on every billing, website, and user account anyway.

We also intend to drop our local phone service.

Hope this backfires and costs them more than it saves.

Thanks for the crappy service Embarq!

I came looking for others’ stories, to see how bad the problem really is. And I came across Bert Riggsbee’s original comment in 2006.

Well Mr Riggsbee… are you still out there?? Do you DARE show your face, or care to comment? How’s it going for you so far?

I just made this post on the http://www.dslreports.com/comment/1566/23204

dsl reports forum. I will try and make it back to contribute the facts, which I have in abundance. But for now, here’s my feelings on it:

      ———————————————

I realize this string mostly concerns Sprint. Don’t get me going on them, they were hands down the worst company I can remember dealing with in my adult life… until I found Embarq.

I do not have the time nor inclination to relate the horror stories of what Embarq did… numerous times, and their reckless implementation of forcing the migration of Earthlink customers when they fired Earthlink. I have stories, I have facts. Apologies, but in this post all I offer is my opinions, and my condolences to the (many, from all accounts) others who have been screwed in the same ways I have been.

I simply want to share some of my pain, and scream from the rooftops…. If you have a choice… RUN!!! Don’t walk!!

Embarq SUCKS bad. I am continually amazed.

I will say, in their defense, I have ended up speaking with VERY good and competent support staff there. They have told me some of the truth of what is going on in the company, and it is NOT pretty.

Maybe I’ll try to come back here and give the specifics, to validate this rant, which I can do. Right now its a RANT, and I’m pissed. Embarq sucks, bad. They have screwed me again.

      MD
      Las Vegas
      ————————–

Note - I apologise for the rant; what we really need here is a resource to share the specific problems we have encountered so as to save the uninitiated from the tremendous time troubleshooting and trying to determine if it is a probleem on their end. EMBARQ HAS HAD SOME SERIOUS TECHNICAL ISSUES WITH THEIR MAIL SERVERS, and much of the problems continue. It was finally acknowledged by support, and by the business office who has noted my account, and says I do not have to pay. They told me to call back when it starts working. (!!!WHAT????)

The other issues involve the PROCESS by which they will migrate accounts; what they say will happen, and what does. And now the issue is WHEN!!! It was stated the deadline is Oct 29th. (I have the email). But today, Sept 20th, my Earthlink mail has ceased being forwarded to Embarq, and my EL webmail account has been inactivated. Again, as I experiencee every time - Earthlink will not talk to me, says to contact Embarq. Embarq, if you can get a hold of them, says everything is fine, but I should contact Earthlink.

It SUCKS, BAD. If I were not held hostage in this being my only broadband option, I would be SOOOOO GONE!. I may need to move to a much more expensive cell technology solution with Verizon. It will cost me a fortune, but I have two online businesses that have already suffered greatly at the hands of this reckless company, Embarq.

And Jodi… If you in fact make any headway in making your voice heard, put my name on the list. I can give specifics of what was done to me, and my comments and calls are on record with them. My businesses did take a hit, and I’m pissed, again. But I won’t have a lot of time to contribute - I’ll be working on fixing their screwups.

I WOULD like our voice to be heard. Hit them in the pocket book. I suggest everyone at least do as I did… I called them, got a supervisor, and informed them I would refuse to pay, and that I would be contacting the Federal Trade Commission. As I said… they said ok… I didn’t have to. Whatever that means, I don’t know. We’ll see.

And one more post… a question to those of you using a POP mail client with Embarq. Have you also experienced the problems of authentication failure by their servers? This normally causes the error “password failed authentication” or some such. The problem has decreased for me, where instead of failing for days on end, (on at least 5 different computers, Mac & PC, several different clients) it now only does so occasionally. This is another issue which was, after countless hours with support (And I DO know what I’m doing with computers), it WAS acknowledged to be a problem with their servers.

Do a Google search. It is in fact widely known. Ask Embarq support or Business office. They’ve never heard of it, and will assure you all is good.

      Inept.

    168. This week was very frustrating. I switched over to embark’s pathetic advertisment laced email service and lost all my old emails. Today I used system restore to get them back and signed up for a year’s service with Earthlink. If you pre-pay with Earthlink it’s only 29 bucks a year–well worth it to me. I don’t know what kind of drugs the people at embarq are taking, but they should share them with the rest of us if they want us to believe their email service is an upgrade. If only I had another phone service option I would drop them entirely. I recommend not dealing with them if at all possible.

    169. I’m a Comcast user with a Yahoo mail account. I use Outlook Express to download my Yahoo email. I have been helping a friend who uses Embarq DSL with Windows Vista mail to download her Embarq email. She is currently having problems with the Embarq mail server and that’s why I’ve come to this forum. I am really struck by the number of complaints I see here about Embarq. In helping some of my neighbors with their email problems I usually try to steer them away for AOL and onto Copper.net as their dial up ISP. I’ve found Copper to be a good choice. Cheaper, better, no-hassle etc. Now, for you unhappy Embarq people, I see that Copper is now offering DSL service for $20 a month. While I have no personal interest in DSL, it sounds like this could be an alternative to frazzled Embarq users. Just log on to www.copper.net and see if their DSL is available in your area.

    170. When I logged in to Embaq’s webmail, I got possibly the MOST ANNOYING advertisement I’ve ever run across. It was a couple of guys singing, and there was no obvious way to close the window.
      Ugh.
I may just forget the Embarq address and find something less intrusive.

    171. I an sorry that embarq has done this. Earthlink was much easier to use. My email page is cluttered with words on top of words. It loads everything more slowly, and frequently shuts down. Things that almost never happened before the switch. I hate the advertising. The news headlines in the various categories is changed only once in a blue moon so that headlines tout events that are actually several weeks old. Again, Earthlink kept up to date. I lost several features such as local news on my home page. I now have to log in or go to several steps just to get to my home page. Again…well you know. Of all my friends who have changed to Embarqmail, every one of them hates it. Some have paid the fee to switch back to Earthlink. I plan to stay in hopes that the powers that be might work to get things right after a rocky start. Any one of the things that I have mentioned might be a good place to start. Or you might want to make the email feature as simple as Earthlink was, especially when adding a neme to the TO: with a simple step, or when making photo attachments so that they don’t take forever. Forget the embartq suite or whatever you want to call it. I’ll stay til you get it right… if only I can see some evidence that someone is listening and trying.

    175. Well, thanks to the individual who posted the pop and smtp’s on this board, I got my MS Outlook working again. I had 400-+ emails trapped in the lousy on-line reader, which is as slow as molasses.

I downloaded the Embarq security software since I had always been so pleased with the Spamblocker on Earthlink, hoping it would work the same. When I rebooted, the browser was so vastly slow that I couldn’t get any page to load AT ALL. I use Firefox for my browser, so maybe it isn’t integrated w/ Firefox or whatever, but I deleted it and the browser works fine now.

Am I now exposed to the slings and arrows of SPAM without my beloved “blocked” list? Please tell me there was a transfer done on my spam control as well! Or, barring that, is there some alternative spam blocker on Embarq without their browser-crushing firewall?

PS- What’s with all the ADVERTISING for cheesy businesses everywhere on the site?

    176. For you guys that don’t like the look and feel of Embarq: I’m using outlook express to retrieve mail from my three embarq addresses (it’s faster than going to embarq and switching addresses there, and there are no ads). I’m also using my old earthlink homepage with my local news, calendar, etc. For me, it’s like I’m still using earthlink. Setting up outlook is fairly easy (see previous posts and new instructions on embarq support page) Only thing, I don’t have the old spamblocker, which I miss but, I’m not going to download any of embarq’s security programs - too risky, I feel.

    177. I too was very frustrated that Embark got rid of earthlink and I am being forced to change a long standing email address. I resisted the change for the last several months. I friend suggested that I get a gmail, hotmail or other free account that was unlikely to change. I signed up for a gmail account tonight and it was so easy I could not believe it. They even gave specific instructions on all the settings for my POP3 to Outlook. I then migrated my earthlink to embarqmail so I would have a back up address that I never intend to give to anyone. After an hour of playing with the POP settings I was forced to call embarq tech support since it was not functioning and there is zero information on their website on how to do this (hence how I landed on this site). I must give them credit - the rep was extremely helpful, polite and had a very positive tone of voice. He walked me through everything and stayed on the line until I could see it was working by sending myself a test message. Although I think it was a big mistake for Embarq to force us to change to an email address that no one will ever be able to spell and to create a webmail system that is slow because of all the ads I have found a fairly satisfactory solution in gmail. Now comes the pain in notifying everyone of my new address which will probably take weeks and months before I discover them all.

    178. My experience: I switched from Earthlink to Embarqmail two months ago. 1) I now receive porn ads via Embarqmail that I never got with Earthlink, 2) the Embarqmail servers are slower and down more frequently than Earthlink ever was, 3) unlike Earthlink, Embarq does not have newsgroups.

    179. If I go to earthlink and change to Earthlink Experience, then I should then have no email account relationship to embarq. On 31Oct, nothing should happen to my earthlink email; RIGHT?

Then can I still create new embarq email acocunts to see how embarq works and developes over the next few months or year. I should be able to have both, because I will be paying for both; RIGHT?

Embarq cannot say that I cannot have embarq email because it is part of the contracted service. They cannot say I cannot also have earthlink because I will be paying earthlink separately. Separate contrcat and none of their business.

Other than the obvious “I shouldn’t have to pay for both” - - Comments? ? ?

    180. Sounds like it should work. You could use embarqmail as your spam catcher email address when you’re trolling suspect sites.

    181. I have been reading these posts for 4 months now. I dreaded moving my email to embarqmail.com. I called Embarq Sunday night and asked how to keep earthlink. I would have to do it through embarq. I told the lady my fears in changing. She said there were problems but certainly not as many now. She said I could pay earthlink and later switch to embarq but would lose my ability to migrate my earthlink mail after October 31. I didn’t care about that as I use Thunderbird and didn’t keep mail on earthlink site. But the thought of paying for email when I already pay enough for DSL was enough to make me bite the bullet and change.
In all fairness to embarq I must say it was a very simple process. The migration took very little time. I then changed my POP settings for Thunderbird and I was in business. My mail receives and sends very quickly. Now what I have noticed is the embarq webmail is SLOW.
So my advice is download Thunderbird and follow the POP directions. Very simple. Here is what I learned from trial and error:
      Incoming mail server: pop.embarqmail.com
      Outgoing mail server: smtp.embarqmail.com
Use your email full address as your username
      xxxx@embarqmail.com
Also what I learned from this was , do not check use secure authentication in server settings for incoming mail. Leave that Never.
With outgoing: bullet the TLS, if available. Check mark use name and password.
So far no problems with embarqmail and I am getting my forwards from earthlink.

I wonder who foots the bill to change all the stationery both paper and electronic. There’s a paper mill 2 hours west of here and you should see the trees that go there every day. Why doesb’t National Geographic weigh in on issues like these before all thr trees are gobe?

Seriously, I’ve been with Earthlink and Speint since their advent and willingly let Sprint monopolize the local land telephone (I have many lines) and thought Earthlink to be a safe choice. In a decade of not a single bill late ever I get this notice while checking daily e-mail.

This lonely male cow says “Have a great decade Embarq” and “Earthlink” This is a headache I don’t agree to click on the “accept” box. I hear every vote counts in America. Enron and MCI. What a lesson we were all supposed to learn. I hope I learned my lesson.

    183. I thought my e-mail address was —fozzie59948@myembarq.com. This is what I was told when I switched to Embarq. Do I have to change it again? Also, the earthlink mail was much better as I could have folders to store my e-mail. This stuff is all over the board.

    184. I switched to embarqmail from earhtlink about 45 days ago. I have had nothing but problems. I could live with no spam filters and less user friendly webmail site, but I cannot live with email servers that are down for days and struggle to interface with Outlook. I have had a trouble ticket with Embarq since 10/9 still open with email latency issues (finally got a tech to be able to duplicate the problem with one (the primary unfortunately) of my 8 email accounts. I have never gotten a call back, but have called to check 3 times to no avial. They tell me a call has been placed to the embarqmail gods but they have not call back.

Now yesterday morning I was unable to get to any webmail accounts. I called and was told the entire system was down. Late afternoon, a few of the accounts starting to open up, but not my primary so I called again. BTW I have tried to chat with their support folks and 2 have cut me off; don’t waste your time chatting.

Based on my latest call here is what I have been told. 3 of the 6 embarqmail servers have been down and my primary email address is on one of them. They are working on the problem and it should be resolved in the next 2 to 4 hours. That is what I was told a week ago and this past Friday. I can’t run a business without email access and right now my emails since last Friday are locked down in and Embarq server.

I have tried to contact someone that matters at embarq, but no luck. They were not ready for the shift form earthlink and the guy/gal that structured their system should be fired.

I have been on hold waiting for support this am for about 25 minute now. Will be setting up a 3rd party email by end of day. Embarqmail sucks!

    185. For those of you having so much trouble with Embarqmail - just don’t use them - I refuse to use a second rate email service. There are free email accounts that are Pop3 and IMAP and will work great with your Outlook or Outlook Express! AOL is free - go set up as many as you want. That’s what I did. Great mail service with AOL - I use it as IMAP and my Outlook gets it just fine - no problems! I also pay only $2.95 a month for 10 GB for APN newsgroup service with the same newsfeed that Earthlink uses - SuperNews. I signed up for that here:
      http://www.forteinc.com/apn/index.php

I have no choice but to use Embarq DSL right now without paying triple what I am paying to use wither satellite or wireless so I have found my way around the sorry mail service and no newsgroups. Try it… better than being all bent outa shape over the poor mail service Embarq provides and the spammer-sounding email address they give you!

I have no problem with my basic DSL connection to the internet thru Embarq, so I use Embarq for that only and I go elsewhere for everything else that Earthlink was providing and that is how I am doing it.

    186. Embarq has been providing Internet Service Provider functionality for less than a year now. Previously, they were only supplying an Internet connection and they’ve only been doing that as Embarq for a year and half. EarthLink had been in the business for 12+ years.

EarthLink has certainly had their own problems to deal with over the last 12 years.

Yes, Embarq’s ISP service is not as good as EarthLink. However, EarthLink service is going downhill in other areas nor does EarthLink work with Embarq to accommodate the needs of Embarq customers.

Yes, there are problems with the change over that are a result of poor planning. Yes, some people are having an awful experience with the changeover. No, not everyone - not even the majority - are having a difficult changeover.

In the long-term, Embarq will be able to provide better service to Embarq customers than it could provide with EarthLink service. If Embarq loses customers while building this service then Embarq will have to work hard to win them back

Sticking with EarthLink would be maintaining the status-quo. The status-quo was not good enough.

    187. I don’t know why it’s such a difficult process…it’s not rocket science to migrate an account. Now I’m not pro embarq at all, truthfully I feel they and the outsourced company that provides support (US Support Company) are full of it and the worst to work for! They tell employees not to roll trucks even if it is needed for poor line stats, instead they tell us to send a new mdm or set up a splitter install for no or intermittent sync or a bad line.
Also for those who claim to run a business and lose tons of money because their embarq mail is down…How’s this for a concept? You get what you pay for! Why not spend some money and buy your own domain with your own true personal address…jmo
For those who have no other options, you can get info on embarq email, security etc. go to www.myembarq.com, on the left side under the directory link look down the list of links for support and it will have a plethora of info there. Good luck and for those who choose to stay with embarq and still have questions that aren’t being answered you can email the corporate office or email me and I’ll do my best to assist you. I’ve worked for mostly every ISP out there and by far this one is the worst hands down. But with the knowledge I’ve gained I will be going into business for myself providing internet connectivity and other IT consulting and troubleshooting services.

    188. Well, I made the decision and completly did away with Earthlink. Why?… one might ask. Today after work I phoned Earthlink because neither the personal or business web mail would accept any password.

Earthlink told me that the web site they hosted for 5 years did bot exist. They told me to contact Embarq. Embarcq told me they don’t host web sites and to re-contact Earthlink.

I kept my cool as they wasted tons more of my time but this time I simply surrendered and made sure that Earthlink completley purged me from their system. Really folks, these 2 companies have shot themselves in the foot but the techs are completely helpless except to add (take your $$$) you to their system and gladly sell you add ons or as in my case after 3 full hours of trying, purge you out.

The easiest thing to do is switch to Embarq but in my case that was impossible because there are so many things I need from my ISP. After reading some of these posts I see I’m not alone.

I respect all comments trying to keep everyone calm on this blog and just move on to Embarq. The techs on both sides just kept saying “I’m sorry sir but…..) 3 more hours to finally and truly end the Earthlink madness that before last week had operated seamlessly with friendly techs when needed. My last and hopefully my final call to Earthlink was handled like a professional and she told me they have lost a lot of customers.

    189. Well Kevin I have MY OWN domains BUT I am forced to use Embarq for my DSL service. Hence I have to send and receive my email from my own domains through Embarq’s servers. There is no other way to do this! So until Embarq gets their crap fixed, myself and a lot of other people with their own domains having to use Embarq as an ISP are screwed. As an IT you should know this.

      Comment by Rick — October 22, 2007 #

    190. Rick, I too, have my own domain name and, like you, must use Embarq DSL. However, my domain name is hosted by Earthlink and I made arrangements to keep my 5 Earthlink email addresses that are, in turn, linked to my domain name email addresses for an extra $5/month to Earthlink. The scuttlebutt is that Embarq doesn’t host domain names– I don’t know if that is actually true, though. I hope I haven’t misconstrued what you were conveying to Kevin.

    191. When I received a letter from Embarq informing me of what was to happen, they neglected to mention that no only was I going to loose a much better email service but also access to news groups and other information. Access to my Embarq email is EXTREMELY slow in starting, most email sent to me@embarq.com doesn’t arrive but it does when sent to me@embarqmail.com (go figure), you get basically no filtering capability for spamming or anti-virus protection like you did with EarthLink. Oh sure you can get some of that if you either download plug-ins (which means it’s on your end and not there’s) or purchase other options. The screen is cluttered and you can’t get rid of the advertisement pane that is on the right, have very little control over personal settings and in short just a poor replacement for EarthLink. When you forward an email with inline pictures they arrive at the destination as attachments, thus destroying the effectiveness of the message. No where in Embarq’s letter did they tell you that your new free service sucks! I now prefer to use yahoo or gmail and am looking for a replacement for my DSL service with them.

      — A truly dissatisfied customer.

    193. Can anyone on this planet help. I switched mail servers the beginning of Oct. Have talked w/tech support twice with no luck. All of my settings with Outlook express are correct per myself and a remotely logged in Embarq technician. I’m only able to send/recieve sporatically (every 4-5 days, for a few minutes at a time. Never had an issue with the earthlink server ever. Embarq tech apologized and added “Good Luck”. BTW, I am able to access my mail through myembarq without issues….but do I have to be forced to do it?
      Anybody???

    195. I made the move and switched my phone and ISP service away from embarq to TWC. Like many before I had a ton of hassles with embarq/sprint since I was forced, through lack of competition in this area, to have them as our phone provider. This started the day we arrived at our new home four years ago. The earthlink and embarq communication breakdown (as described above) happened to me too. Some of the service I received from embarq was good, but in general their customer service was terrible. Just writing this makes me angry again… I have been receiving bills, after I received a check back from them. When I tried to query this amount, they couldn’t help me, and the person who was supposed to help, hung up on me. No kidding! I was a bit sad to see my earthlink account go, but it was going to die anyway. We are fortunate to live in an area where a switch was possible and I end up saving money. Embarq, you lost a customer. I will try to never use any of your services again. I will also make sure none of my friends and family make the same mistake.

    196. I too was am earthlink customer and switched to embarq. First of all their “3 easy steps” did not work at all, I spent the better part of an hour to get in through back door of their website to switch. That should have been a clue, shame on me for not realizing that the rest of their software was probably as useless. But I switched anyway only to find the most time consuming mail service if you have multiple address’s. When I called customer service I was told that I should not use firefox and should use internet explorer. If I wanted to use internet explorer as my browser I already would be, and and certainly don’t need some rude little snot on the phone telling what software I should use because their mailbox is crap. I would recommend that anyone who is busy and does not want to spend a bunch of time with their Email to find a better server. I went to Go Daddy and love it, their customer support is second to none and they speak English. good luck.

    197. Thanks Larry but it wasn’t an anti-virus conflict. In fact, right after I posted my last comment my outlook express has been working flawlessly…….Interesting. Someone changed something that tech support didn’t see(or was unable to change). And you pay those guys for what reason? Thanks to whomever resolved my two month headache.

    198. Well, the October 31 “witching hour” has come and gone and my email service has remained undisturbed. Of course, I stayed with Earthlink and ate the additional charge of $5/mo (for 5 email addresses). Considering the hassles of those that have posted on this forum and of the people that are personally known to me, I think I got a bargain. It wouldn’t have been my preferred scenario — I would have preferred that Embarq would have LEFT EVERYTHING WITH EARTHLINK.

    199. I to have been getting the sporadic sending of email since I was forced to switch. Sometimes Outlook will send fine but then some days it will be all day that I cannot sent mail then the next day it works just fine.

    200. FYI - Embarq.com could NOT be used as an e-mail domain for the common customer as embarq.com is used for the corporate. FYI; hence, embarqmail.com had to be used. I think the current embarqmail servers have come along way! you’ll see the true benefits down the road. Plus, who likes changes anyway? Most don’t….you’ll get used to it….

    203. While visiting my parents I was surprised to find how terrible their computer was running and how frustrated they were with embarq. The webmail was the first complaint. My parents were told they *had* to use webmail and would not be able to use Outlook. I found this page looking for pop settings. The webmail is terrible. How can anyone read more than a few words at a time? The page had 350+ items to download too. Why did tech support tell them they had to use it?

While trying to help them fix their computer, it kept crashing. The problem was the lousy embarq firewall/popup blocker software. Once I removed this, everything worked as expected.

As for the embarqmail.com domain, it is lengthy, and difficult to communicate to others. If customer satisfaction is their #1 priority, they could easily pay the $10 for another domain and alias it.

The few people who say they work for or represent embarq, yet write incomplete and incoherent sentences, should really stay away from boards like this. Those people just anger the others who see reality, not corporate brainwashing.

For those who dont want to read everything and came looking for pop settings, here you go.
      incoming: pop.embarqmail.com
      outgoing: smtp.embarqmail.com
      login: username@embarqmail.com

That is because there is no usenet or web space anymore. Getting rid of them was part of Embarq’s “upgrade”.
