Mobile Web: The Next Great Advertising Medium?

Surveys suggest that North American cell phone users remain cautious about the idea of receiving ads on their phones, but more of these users experiment with wireless web services, they may gradually become more accepting of tasteful web advertisements.
About 15% of U.S. wireless subscribers regularly access the internet on their mobile phones, according to research by M:Metrics, suggesting that more users than ever are looking for more than basic voice over the wireless airwaves.
Carriers like Verizon Wireless and AT&T are hoping to capitalize on this trend by offering their own “walled garden†mobile portals, and providing a multitude of information services (supplemented by advertising) in one place. Internet search engines like Google and Yahoo, meanwhile, have created special versions of their online services to better appeal to mobile device users.
It appears inevitable that the web will slowly but surely make its way onto the third screen, bringing the high-profit business of mobile advertising right along with it. As customer acceptance improves, advertising will likely be used to subsidize new advances in the wireless information and entertainment industries, perhaps even jump-starting the market for mobile video services.
