The president of Motorola’s Mobile Devices unit, Ron Garriques, has resigned from his position, effective immediately, to take a new job heading up the Global Consumer division at Dell Computers.

In his new role, Garriques will manage development and sales of a diverse portfolio of consumer products, ranging from desktop and notebook computers to peripherals and software.

“As the number of people online doubles from one to two billion over the next several years, the majority of new consumers will be located in fast-growing and emerging markets,” commented Dell founder and CEO, Michael Dell. “We are asking Ron to create a new global consumer organization that will set new standards for innovative product design, leadership in providing the best customer experience, and flexibility in how we build and distribute products and services to meet the evolving needs of our customers around the world.”

Garriques’ now vacant position at Motorola will be taken over by that company’s senior vice presidents of sales and devices, Ray Roman and Terry Vega, who will serve as interim co-heads of the Mobile Devices business.
