Canada’s second largest telecom provider, Telus Corp., reported a surge in fourth-quarter profits on Friday, due to high demand for wireless data services like text messaging, music downloads, and mobile gaming.

Telus earned a total of C$236.2 million, or $0.69/share, for the three months ending on December 31, up from $78.5 million in the same period a year ago. Total revenue climbed 8%, meanwhile to $2.25 billion, $1.02 billion of which came from the company’s wireless business, Telus Mobility.

The ARPU (average revenue per user) of Telus’ wireless division increased by $2 in 2006 to $64.50. ARPU from wireless services was up 94% for the year, reaching $6.16 in the fourth quarter.
