Voice-Activated Technology Poised to Take Cell Phone Industry by Storm
6:30 am on February 27, 2007 | Category: Cell Phones, Mobile Devices, WirelessMobile voice recognition technology for has been around for some time now, with many cell phones sporting voice-activated dialing and navigation features. Most mainstream consumers, however, seem either unaware of these features, or reluctant to use them.
But as mobile gaming, multimedia, web surfing, and search become increasingly popular, many industry insiders believe that it is only a matter of time before voice-enabled services gain the status of a must-have feature.
“As [service providers] add more content to their decks, there is a marginal cost, and that cost is measured in frustration,†explained Brady Bruce of Promptu, a voice-enabled mobile software developer. “If I’ve got a catalog with 500,000 songs in it, and the current method for locating content is to scroll and click through screen after screen, or to text search, every new title makes what’s already there harder to find. Voice flattens the deck so that every title is one click and one utterance away.â€
As mobile content, search, and advertising become an increasingly important part of the wireless communication industry, it will be up to carriers to better promote voice-based cell phone technology, and put easy-to-use advanced cell phone services within reach of the masses.
