A total of 92 Wi-Fi phones have been certified since the beginning of 2004, according to a press statement this week by the Wi-Fi Alliance, a trade group responsible for certifying new 802.11-based wireless gear.

“The growth in certification reflects the momentum in the market for devices with combined cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity, and manufacturers’ and carriers’ enthusiasm for the unique voice and data capabilities Wi-Fi adds to a handset,” commented the group’s managing director, Frank Hanzlik. “Wi-Fi-certified handsets give carriers confidence about adding converged devices to their networks.”

82 of the 92 phones certified to date have been dual-mode devices, meaning that they work on both WLAN and cellular networks. Some of the leading manufacturers of these handsets include Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, and Siemens, all of which are members of the Wi-Fi Alliance.

The dual-mode handset market is expected to see continued strong growth in the years to come, with ABI Research analysts predicting that 325 million converged Wi-Fi/cellular devices will be shipped annually by 2011.
