Yahoo Inc. announced on the weekend that it has signed up a number of big-name corporate advertisers for its mobile brand advertising services.
The internet giant says it will target the corporate branding ad program towards wireless users in 18 countries throughout western Europe, southern Asia, and the Americas. This represents a major diversification for Yahoo, beyond its core market of internet-connected computer users.
Some of the advertisers participating in Yahoo’s program include, Intel Corp., Nissan, Infiniti, Pepsi & Co, Procter & Gamble, and Hilton’s Embassy Suites, as well as Asia Pacific and Singapore Airlines.
“This is really about Yahoo staking out its leadership in the emerging space on the mobile phone,” commented the web giant’s senior vice president for mobile and broadband, Steve Boom.
Yahoo already provides online marketing services to the majority of America’s top 100 advertisers, and hopes to gain a competitive advantage over Google and the “walled gardens†of wireless carriers in the mobile advertising space.
