AT&T to Spend $750 Million this Year on Global Network Expansion

U.S.-based telecom giant, AT&T Inc., is planning to spend $750 million this year on expanding the geographic reach of its global IP backbone and bolstering its portfolio of business communication services for the international market.

AT&T intends to expand its IP MLPS network in a number of countries, most notably Vietnam, Pakistan, Morocco, and India, according to the carrier’s senior vice president of product management, Bill Archer. By the end of the year, AT&T also aims to extend its DSL and Ethernet networks to serve 34 and 31 countries, respectively.

The company will spend “considerably more than in 2006” on expanding infrastructure, network assets, and service availability, Archer says, in the hope of “enhancing performance, flexibility and customer control of application delivery on virtual networks.”

AT&T appointed a new executive as “President of Global Operations” earlier this month, which is part of the same ongoing attempt to increase its presence in the international marketplace.
