The U.S. Federal Communications Commission ruled last week that wireless broadband should be classified as an “information service” under the Communications Act, putting it on the same regulatory footing as other high-speed internet services such as DSL, cable, and Broadband over Power Lines.

For the purpose of the FCC ruling, “wireless broadband” refers to any an service that uses fixed, portable, or mobile technologies to transmit a data signal over the airwaves over short, medium, or long ranges.

In accordance with this principle, the FCC also decided that data services delivered over cellular networks are not “commercial mobile services” in the same way as wireless voice packages, but fall under the broad “information service” description.
