The French government has begun the tender process for the upcoming sale of a UMTS third-generation wireless license, with telecom regulator ARCEP announcing that applications to buy the spectrum will be accepted until July 31.

France’s existing mobile phone carriers – Orange, Bouygues Telecom, SFR, and Vodafone – each paid €619 million for their respective UMTS licenses, and any new entrant to the market would likely be charged the same amount. License holders are also required to pay 1% of all wireless revenues to the French government.

Internet Service Provider, Iliad, and privately owned cable TV group, Noos-Numericable, have both expressed interest in buying the new UMTS license and becoming the next major competitor in France’s 3G cellular market.
