American media conglomerate, Viacom, announced on Wednesday that it had signed on Intel and Pepsi as the first corporate sponsors for a new service letting cell phone users access MTV Networks programming on their mobile devices.
Viacom CEO, Philippe Dauman, pitched the offering as an innovative way for advertisers to reach consumers, and for wireless carriers to create a new stream of income.
“We believe advertising can work on the wireless platform. Indeed we view it as a critical medium,” Dauman said in his keynote speech at the CTIA Wireless trade show this week in Orlando, Florida.
The Intel and Pepsi brand names will be featured alongside programming from MTV and Comedy Central, on specially dedicated mobile video channels. Viacom hopes to bring more of its television properties, including Nickelodeon, TV Land, and Spike TV to mobile viewers beginning in the second quarter.
