An administrative law judge delayed one of Qualcomm Inc.’s many lawsuits against cell phone giant, Nokia this week, in the form of a two sentence written order.

Judge Robert L. Barton Jr. of the U.S. International Trade Commission gave no explanation for halting the trial, which was set to begin on Monday, but is now delayed until further notice.

Nokia has used this as an opportunity to publicly downplay Qualcomm’s case, and is apparently hopeful that the suit will be dismissed before going to trial.

“Nokia is confident that it has not infringed any Qualcomm patents that are at issue in this investigation,” the Finnish company asserted in a statement.

“Since Qualcomm filed its complaint, it has voluntarily withdrawn three of the six patents from the suit. The remaining three are all from the same patent family. Nokia believes the patent withdrawal reflects on the weakness of Qualcomm’s case,” the handset maker’s statement went on to say.

Qualcomm’s lawsuit, originally filed in June 2006, alleges that several Nokia products infringe on its GSM wireless technology patents.
