Telus Files for Injunction Against “Misleading” Bell Mobility Ads

Telus Corp. is set to face off against rival, Bell Mobility in BC Supreme Court today, in an effort to gag what it describes as “false and misleading” claims about Bell’s wireless network in western Canada.
In its application for a court injunction, Burnaby-based Telus says that Bell is misleading customers with print and online advertisements claiming to offer the best wireless coverage in western Canada.
Telus insists that Bell’s network is limited to “lucrative urban markets” like Vancouver, Victoria, Edmonton, and Calgary, accounting for less than 1% of the total land area in BC and Alberta. The Montreal-based carrier’s rural coverage depends entirely on CDMA network facilities rented from Telus, the court filing alleges.
“They’re effectively claiming ownership of Telus’ network,” commented a spokesman for the Burnaby telecom giant. “We just can’t let that go.”
The Canadian wireless market has always been fiercely competitive, and was made even more so last week with the introduction of wireless number portability.
