Verizon Communications Inc. has boosted the speed of its fiber optic internet service in five counties surrounding Tampa, Florida this week, providing data transfer speeds of up to 50 Mbps downstream.

The lightning fast 50 Mbps tier of broadband services now available in select markets in six U.S. states, including Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

Verizon’s fiber optic broadband network now passes more than 6 million homes in 16 states, the company says, although it is unclear how many of these households could subscribe to the 50 Mbps tier.
