Verizon’s FiOS video service is challenging the pay-TV dominance of cable incumbents in various U.S. cities, and is about to take on cable operators in yet another market: local broadcasting.

Verizon is reportedly planning to unveil “a whole new breed of TV channel” tomorrow for the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. FiOS1 will be the first “Verizon-owned-and-operated TV channel in the country,” and very likely not the last.

Available exclusively to fiber optic television subscribers, FiOS1 will carry a variety of local news, traffic, weather, and sports programming, as well as featured content from “citizen video journalists.”
