Verizon’s fiber optic television product, FiOS TV, has won yet another video franchise in the state of Florida, this time gaining regulatory approval in the city of Port Richey.
Municipal authorities voted in favour of Verizon’s competitive new service, as a potential challenge to the existing cable monopoly. FiOS will initially be offered to around 16,000 of the area’s residents and should be further extended to cover all of Port Richey, New Port Richey, and the surrounding communities within the next three years.
“The decision by the New Port Richey City Council to grant Verizon a franchise marks the last franchise we needed to serve all of our territories in Pasco County,” commented Verizon’s Southeast regional president, Alan Ciamporcero. “New Port Richey, Port Richey, Pasco County and Zephyrhills make it a clean sweep — our all-fiber network will be a valuable economic development project for these communities and a great service for consumers.”
