Verizon Wins State-Issued Cable TV Franchise in Southern California
8:00 am on March 11, 2007 | Category: Regulation, Telecom Services, Television
Quad-play telecom giant, Verizon Communications, has gained regulatory approval to launch its FiOS fiber optic television service in 45 communities in South California.
This could pose a big competitive threat to incumbent cable operators like Time Warner and Charter Communications in Los Angeles and Orange County, which are covered by Verizon’s new cable franchise.
Verizon has already launched FiOS TV services in 18 California markets under municipal franchise agreements, but this franchise is the first to be granted by the state’s Public Utilities Commission.
“The commission’s rapid approval of our application opens up an exciting new dimension in home entertainment for many of our Southern California customers,” commented Tim McCallion, Verizon’s regional president for the western U.S. “This is a huge victory for consumers.”
