Paris-based telecom equipment maker, Alcatel-Lucent has won a $6 billion, three-year contract to help Verizon Wireless expand its EV-DO Revision A cellular network.

The agreement hinted at Verizon’s intentions for its Revision A third-generation network, with a press release indicating that the system will support “Voice over IP, push-to-x, mobile video telephony and more.”

“This agreement underscores Verizon Wireless’ commitment to quality and to further enhancing the industry-leading multimedia and data services that its customers already enjoy,” commented the president of Alcatel-Lucent’s North American business, Cindy Christy. “We are proud of the confidence Verizon Wireless has in our abilities and our comprehensive and extensive portfolio of products, solutions and services.”

Verizon is currently in a race with rival carrier, Sprint Nextel, to deploy Revision A technology, which allows for faster data transmission than the original EV-DO standard.
