New York-based cell phone giant, Verizon Wireless, launched America’s first live mobile television service this week, offering full-length programs in 20 states, with picture quality comparable to that of cable TV.

The new service costs $15 per month, and includes eight channels of 24 hour broadcast programming. It is powered by MediaFLO, a mobile television network developed by San Diego-based chipmaker, Qualcomm.

By rolling out live mobile TV ahead of its competitors, Verizon is hoping to get a stronger grip on the wireless entertainment market, which it began targeting in early 2006 with the V CAST music and video network.

Wireless multimedia services have become increasingly important to carriers in the past couple of years, due to an ongoing decline in the price of cellular voice service.
