Worldwide Wi-Fi VoIP revenues will grow to reach US$82 billion by the year 2012, says a new report by Juniper Research.

Analysts predict that North America will remain the leading wireless VoIP market with total revenue of $35 billion. Europe, Africa, and the Middle East are expected to generate a combined total of $23 billion, while Asia Pacific countries bring in revenue of $21 billion.

“The dual mode handset market will pick up much faster in the coming years than the single mode Wi-Fi handset sector,” commented report author, Basharat Hamid Ashai. “The handset market is moving to a stage where no one wants to carry two or three devices in their pocket, so the ability to have a single device for all calls is a compelling proposition.”

“Most single mode VoIP over Wi-Fi handset manufactures are actively either designing or planning to ship dual mode phones,” Ashai went on to say.

The proliferation of citywide mesh Wi-Fi networks will be another key factor boosting wireless VoIP, the report predicted, as customers demand cheaper mobile voice service where wireless broadband is available.
