Alcatel-Lucent’s Chinese division, Alcatel Shanghai Bell, has won a contract to provide TD-SCDMA cellular systems to China Mobile for its ongoing trial expansion of 3G wireless networks.
Alcatel, along with China-based Datang Mobile, was selected to provide equipment for trial networks in the cities of Shanghai and Guangzhou, using China’s homegrown third-generation wireless standard.
Many carriers have been reluctant to use TD-SCDMA, the homegrown system, saying that it does not work as well as the W-CDMA and CDMA2000 technologies used in most other countries. China’s Communist government has aggressively pushed its own standard onto the mobile phone industry, however, leaving little room for choice or negotiation.
