The youth of America are increasingly relying on cell phones, text messaging, and internet communication to carry on their day-to-day social interaction, according to a recent survey of 1,726 children and teens aged 8 to 18.

Cellular phones are the communication method of choice when arranging to meet with friends, inviting people to attend a party or event, having a quick conversation, or contacting a friend when bored, the survey found. 29% of those surveyed thought they would be likely to miss out on activities with friends if they didn’t have a cell phone.

Web-based social networking sites, meanwhile, are frequently used to leave short messages or stay in touch with friends who are out of town or at a different school.
