British communications provider, Cable & Wireless PLC is poised to win a broadband supply contract from Virgin Media, allowing it to sell high-speed internet services to millions of UK customers out of reach of Virgin’s cable network, according to a report in The Sunday Times.

The newspaper report, which did not name its sources, said that Virgin had selected C&W and was no longer negotiating with other suppliers, although it would not formally announce its decision until sometime next month.

A contract with C&W will allow Virgin to offer cable television, digital phone, and high-speed internet service in areas not covered by its own cable network.

Lack of national reach, resulting from restrictive geographical regulations in the past, has always been a frustration for Britain’s cable sector.
