DSL continues to hold a statistical two-to-one advantage over cable and fiber-optic services in the global broadband market, according to a recent report by Point Topic.

The telecom-based technology was used by 65.7% of the world’s 281 million high-speed internet subscribers, as of December 31, and accounted for two thirds of new broadband subscriptions last year.

The number of subscribers using a fiber-optic broadband connection has grown to 10% worldwide, fueled largely by FTTx network build-outs in Asia Pacific countries like Japan and South Korea. Most of the remaining 24% of high-speed internet users subscribe to some kind of cable modem service, with satellite broadband accounting for less than 1% of the global total.

America remains the world’s biggest broadband market with a total of 57 million users, but is widely expected to slip behind China within the next couple of years, as the Asian country’s internet population continues to surge.
