Motorola Continues to Dominate U.S. Cell Phone Market

Consumer mobile phone sales in the United States achieved 14% annual growth in 2006, according to market researcher, NPD, with end-of-year shipments totaling an impressive 143 million.
NPD estimates that overall handset sales reached US$8.8 billion last year, after rebates and promotions.
Motorola Inc. was able to maintain its dominance in terms of both subscriber share and phone sales, boosting its share of the new handset market from to 33%, compared to 29% in 2005. LG placed a distant second with a 16% market share, while Nokia and Samsung were virtually tied at 15%.
