Traditional telephone operators will need to change their approach to the voice market, as wireless VoIP use surges in the years to come, according to a Juniper Research study.

Global of dual-mode and dedicated Wi-Fi handsets are expected to reach $82 billion in the year 2012, the study said. This is expected to reduce demand for landline telephone services, possibly opening the door for non-traditional voice providers such as independent broadband ISPs.

“VoIP is dramatically changing the service provider market, explained Juniper researcher,” Basharat Hamid Ashai. “With the advent of VoIP over Wi-Fi, it will cause providers to rethink how they retain customers.”

“The marriage of VoIP and wireless technology has gained a lot of attention in the last couple of years, with many industry experts believing it to be the next killer application to revolutionize the telecoms space,” Ashai went on to say.
