Telephone calls from the U.S. to Cuba just got a little bit cheaper, thanks to a new long distance calling plan from AT&T.

America’s largest telecom provider will charge $0.75/minute for calls to the communist-ruled Caribbean nation for subscribers who order a domestic long distance package, as well as a $7.99/month “Cuba plan.” AT&T’s other long distance plans offer calls to Cuba at a rate of about $0.85/minute, while many other phone companies charge around $1.15/minute.

Ania Lopez, a Cuban immigrant living in West Palm Beach, Florida, notes that it is difficult to keep in touch with family members on the island, as outgoing calls from Cuba to the U.S. to the are also highly expensive due to current political conditions.

The United States government has kept a strict economic embargo on Cuba for over four decades now, in an effort to keep money from flowing to the communist country. Phone companies are licensed to pay connection fees to Cuba, as part of an effort to maintain family ties between immigrants and their families.

    1. How do we confirm the l.d. rates to CUBA from AT&T?
We just want to make ocassional calls but don’t want to be overcharged.
