BT has reclaimed its lead over Virgin Media in the UK broadband market, according to a recent report from The Sunday Telegraph.
BT added 200,000 new DSL subscribers in the first three months of 2007, the paper reported, bringing its total customer base to 3.6 million. Virgin, meanwhile, which automatically became the largest high-speed internet carrier when Virgin Mobile merged with cable incumbents, NTL and Telewest late last year, has slipped to the #2 position, adding a modest 97,600 cable internet customers in the first quarter.
The combined cable giant, Virgin Media, must now compete with BT in the television market, as the telephone incumbent pushes develops its 21CN communications network, and pushes the BT Vision IPTV service in the consumer sector.
