Comcast CEO Unveils 150-Mbps Cable Modem Technology

Leading cable executives dazzled attendees at the NCTA Cable Show on Tuesday, presenting a new technology capable of transferring data at 150 megabits per second, or around 25 times faster than a standard cable modem.
The technology, known as “channel bonding,†was developed by Cable Television Laboratories, an industry research body. It works by bonding together multiple cable lines, and is “not that dissimilar to modems today,†according to Comcast CEO, Brian Roberts.
ARRIS Group Chief Executive, Robert Stanzione, proceeded to demonstrate the technology by downloading a 32-volume digital copy of Encyclopedia Britannica 2007 and Merriam Webster’s visual dictionary in under four minutes.
“If you look at what just happened, 55 million words, 100,000 articles, more than 22,000 pictures, maps and more than 400 video clips,” Mr. Roberts commented. “The same download on dial-up would have taken two weeks.”
A spokesman for the U.S. National Cable and Telecommunications Association, said that Channel Bonding was the single most important technological advance showcased at the conference this year.
“It’s an exponential step forward and we’re very excited. What consumers actually do with all this speed is up to the imagination of the entrepreneurs of tomorrow,†the NCTA representative commented.

I recently read that France was offering broadband speeds of 150 Mbps, and I thought “How do we not have that?” I guess I spoke too soon. Any word on how much the higher speed will cost?
